Elijah Hopper, infant son of Jessica L. Mason and Mark Hopper passed away Monday evening April 18, 2011, at Meadowview Regional Medical Center.

In addition to his parents, he is also survived by a sister, Kyra Mason; a brother, Brayden Hopper; and grandmothers, Darla Stamper and Linda Hopper.

Elijah was preceded in death by a brother, Christopher William Mason Jr.

Mr. McElfresh

James Nelson "Jimmie" McElfresh 70, of Elizaville, died Monday, April 18, 2011 at Fleming County Hospital after a long illness.

He was born July 20, 1940, in Nicholas County to the late Herbert and Helsie Watkins McElfresh.

He was a retired bus driver for Fleming County School System and a life long farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Humphries McElfresh; children, Ceonia (Tony) Leet, Keith (Mavis) Leet, Pam (Bob) Tribby, Kim (Mike) Razor and Michelle (Eddie) Koehler; siblings, Billy (Edna) McElfresh, Gene (Amanda) McElfresh, Don (Bonnie) McElfresh, and Patsy (Donnie) Vice; grandchildren, Heather and Hannah Leet, Blake Tribby, Kevin Leet, Kelly Wiggins, Luke Wiggins, Paige Muchow and Madison Koehler; and several nieces and nephews

Services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home.

Paulette Kerns, 64, of Flemingsburg, passed away April 16, 2011, at University of Kentucky Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 26, 1946, in Poplar Plains to the late Lorene and Paul Flora.

She had worked at the shoe factory in Flemingsburg, was a volunteer for Hospice of Hope, and a member of Flemingsburg Baptist Church. She was and always will be in our hearts, a loving Wife, Mom, and Mamaw.

Survivors include her husband, Donnie Kerns; children, Ginger (Tony) Selby of Flemingsburg, Randy (Dana Stamper) Kerns of Flemingsburg, and Donna (Gale) Burke of Flemingsburg; two grandsons, Bryan Burke and Ashton Reid; and two brothers, Bill Ware of Indiana and Eddie (Linda) Flora of Michigan, also several nieces and nephews.

Paulette was preceded in death by her parents and her little sister, Susie Flora.

Services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home with Dr. Chris Beckham officiating.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home.

Joe Dan Gold of West Liberty, Ky., passed away Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Ky., at the age of 68 years, 10 months and 7 days. He was born on Sunday, June 7, 1942, at Benton, Ky., son of Violet Louise Frizzell Gold and the late William Hamrick Gold.

Joe Dan was united in marriage to Rosemarie Hards on November 25, 1966. To this union was born two children, John Douglas and JoMarie.

He was a graduate of Mississippi State University, where he played basketball and later became head coach. As a professional educator, he served in the role of teacher, principal, and superintendent.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Hamrick Gold.

Joe Dan is survived by his wife, Rosemarie Gold; two children, John Douglas Gold and wife Christy Norris Gold of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and JoMarie Gold Richardson and husband William of Milford, Ohio; his mother, Violet Louise Gold of Benton, Ky.; four grandchildren, Billie Jo Richardson, Haylee Noel Gold, Samuel Douglas Richardson and Jack Douglas Gold; one stepgrandchild, Courtney Hauck; one stepgreat-grandchild, Will Hauck; two brothers, William Dale Gold and wife Shelia, and Robert Edwin Gold and wife Pat, all of Benton, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Karen Yuna, 58, of Twin Fork Lane, Wallingford, died Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the Fleming County Hospital Emergency Room.

She was born Sept. 20, 1952 in Conneticut

She is survived by her husband, Willard Yuna of Wallingford.

Karen was an avid outdoors person, who loved flower gardening, fishing and anything outdoors.

She is survived by her husband and by two sons, David Goffredo and Vincent Goffredo of Conneticut.; two step-daughters, Yvonne Gallardo of Maryland and Pamla Hite of West Virginia.; a brother, Steven Mellon; a sister, Marianne Morrone of Florida; and four grandchildren.

Services were April 15, 2011 at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Martha Caproni "Sis" Sauer, 84, of Flemingsburg, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at her home.

She was the former Martha Caproni born March 9, 1927, in Ashland, to the late Henry and Eleanor Wade Caproni.

She was a homemaker and a member of St Charles Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Sauer who died June 2, 1986.

She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Sauer Meadows of Flemingsburg and Cheryal Sauer (Les) Davis of Aberdeen, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Carolyn Sauer of Flemingsburg; grandchildren, Brent (Lyndsey) Davis of Ripley, Ohio, Stacie (Jon) Moran of Ripley, Melissa (Michael) Denton of Shelbyville, Dwayne (Tamatha) Meadows of Aberdeen, Ohio, and Andrew (Jennifer) Sauer of Flemingsburg; step-grandchildren, Troy (Amy) Davis of West Union, Ohio, and Angela Frodge of Maysville; great-grandchildren, Austin Meadows of Aberdeen, Savannah Jo Moran of Ripley, and Ashlyn Denton of Shelbyville; step-great-grandchildren, Derrick and Trey Davis of West Union; step-great-greatgrandson, Darius Davis of West Union; brothers, Donald Caproni of Worthington, and Jake (Arlene) Caproni of Amarillo, Texas; and half-brothers and half-sisters, Stephen (Gwen) Caproni of Ashland, David (Shelia) Caproni of Ashland, Mary Brooks of North Carolina, Lena (Lafe) Adkins of West Virginia, and Lea Catherine Hanson of Ashland.

Donnie Ison, age 74, of Morehead Road, Wallingford, Kentucky, a native of Clearfield, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2011, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

He was born February 8, 1937, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late George W. Ison and Rissie Alice Adkins Ison. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Donald “Pete” Ison; two brothers, Arnold Ison and Earl Ison; and two sisters, Loretta Sparkman and Eva Ann Ison Kissick.

Donnie is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lahoma Eldridge Ison, whom he married March 19, 1964; two sons, Jimmy Ison of Morehead, Kentucky, and George Ison of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; one daughter, Donna Ison of Toledo, Ohio; and six grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers, James Ison, Rev. Cecil Ison and Ival Ison, all of Morehead, Kentucky; two sisters, Darlene Morehouse of Batavia, Ohio, and Carol Foster of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Donnie was retired from Fannin’s Ashland after more than 20 years of service.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Cecil Ison and the Rev. Gary Madden officiating. Burial was in the Clearfield Cemetery.

Mrs. Addie Mae Chapman of Energy Road, Flemingsburg went to be with God on April 9, 2011, at her residence.

Addie was the daughter of the late Tommy and Mignon Harmon Emmons, born in Mason County Oct. 27, 1935.

She was a lifelong farmer and housewife and was known as the best cook in Fleming County.

Addie is survived by her children, Arnold (Linda) Dodge, Vennedra (James) Farrow and Connie (Bobby) Gray, all of Fleming County; and grandchildren, Austin Venness, Kristie Dodge, Robert Douglas Dodge, Justin Austin (Sarah) Farrow, McKaylee Raine Gray, Austin Thorne Gray, Charles A. Hunt, Melinda H. Peck and Peggy R. Gilkrist; great-grandchildren, Kailyn Ashley Dodge, Mathew Lee Dodge, Austin James (AJ) Taytum and Kinley Farrow; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Also two sisters, Emma (John) Adams and Jeanie Rader survive.

Addie was preceded in death by her parents and all of her brothers, Lester Allen Emmons, Willie Thomas Emmons, and sisters, Elsie Gray, Dona Roberts, Ann Muse, Mildred Fields and Mabel Plummer.

Addie loved to spend time with her children and grandchildren, farming and square dancing.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday at Price Brothers Funeral Home with Brother John Adams and Rev. Rich Anderson officiating.

She will be laid to rest in the Elizaville Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 4-6 p.m. for the family and 6-9 p.m. for the public.

Esther L. Meadows, 63, died Tuesday morning, April 5, 2011 at Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla.

She was born March 28, 1948 in Blythedale, Penn. to the late John and Ann Hranko Kuno. She retired after 31 years of service from the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier in Mason, Ohio.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, David Meadows; two daughters, Dora Alexander of Peoria Ariz., and Patty Hanson of North Port Fla.; five grandchildren, Jesse Wesseler, Matthew Alexander and Emily Alexander all of Arizona, Piper and Mya Hanson of North Port Fla.; five sisters, Ruthie White, Annette Cornell, Vickie Brown, Shirley Keck and Lois Burroughs; one brother, David Kuno; and several nieces and nephews

Mr. Tumey

James Douglas "Doug" Tumey, 66 of Ewing, departed this earth on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born in Mason County on Sept. 20, 1944, a son of the late Clinton and Audrey Purcell Tumey.

Mr. Tumey retired from Jockey International after 36 years. He was a member of the Ewing Volunteer Fire Department for many years; was sworn in as constable of Ewing in 1989; had served as a deputy sheriff for Fleming County for many years; and was a member of the Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Barbara Morgan.

Survivors include his loving, dedicated wife of 47 years, Sandi Overbey Tumey; one daughter, Paula (Ernie) Knipp of Ewing; one son, Jamie (Heather) Tumey of Ewing; one sister, Debbie (David) Pepper of Ewing; nine grandchildren, Laura, Jeremiah, Christine, Toshia, Lexie, Tyler, Maddie, Jaden and Cami all of Ewing; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born Dec. 4, 1966, in Fleming County to Wanda Hester James of Wallingford and the late Gerald L. James.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Fleming James; two sons, Kye James of Richmond and Austin James; one daughter, Tiffany Christie; and a brother, Devon James of Fleming County.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Tina James.

Ethel E. Gardner, 95, of Tilton, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Fleming County Hospital.

She was born Dec. 7, 1915, in Silver Creek, Wis., to the late William and Ida Geske.

She had been a cook at Hillsboro Elementary School and also worked at Lerman’s in Flemingsburg for 18 years, been a foster grandparent at Hillsboro Elementary for nine years and been a caregiver for the elderly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woody Gardner; a son, William McElwee; a sister, Evelyn Glenn; and two brothers, Williard and Elmer Geske.

Survivors include a son, David and (Ruth Ann) McElwee of Decatur, Ill.; a daughter, Mary Ann and (Ricky) Pendland of Tilton; a granddaughter, Kerri Lynn Pendland Moran of Tilton; and other grandchildren, Rocky, Jennifer, Scott, Sherri Lynn, Leigh Ann, Tresha Kay, Evelyn L. and Sondra; 18 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Winifred Sorrentino of Chippewa Falls, Wis.

Ms. Nealis

Norma Nealis, 85, of Hillsboro, died Monday, March 28, 2011, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mount Sterling.

She was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Hillsboro to the late Durbin and Gertrude Likes Nealis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Berman Nealis, on March 9, 1991; a sister, Pauline Likes Nealis Harmon, on July 20, 2001; and a brother, Robert Kenneth (Bob) Nealis, on Dec. 25, 2010.

Norma is survived by a niece, Kim Harmon Hester of Flemingsburg; a great-niece, Jennifer Hester Gulley and husband, Kenney of Mount Sterling; a great-nephew, Brian Tomas Hester of Wallingford; a great-great-nephew, Benjamin Gulley; and two great-great-nieces, Abigail Gulley and Claire Gulley, both of Mount Sterling.

Most of Norma’s life was spent in the Hillsboro area, where she was a well-known seamstress and Hutton Funeral Home employee. She grew up on the family farm, graduated from Hillsboro Elementary School, and attended Fleming County High School. During World War II, Norma traveled to Cincinnati, where she worked downtown in Carew Tower doing garment alterations and weaving for some of the city’s finest department stores, such as Pogue’s and Shillito-Rikes (now Lazarus). When she returned to Hillsboro following the war, Norma continued her work as a seamstress and tailor. Very proficient at her craft, Norma’s clientele greatly appreciated the perfection of her work and her ability to design and sew an outfit without a pattern. Fashion was always an important part of Norma’s life. At all times, she was stylishly dressed and meticulously groomed. In the early 1970s, Norma left her seamstress shop to become a secretary and greeter for Hutton Funeral Home, as well as the caregiver for Mrs. Hutton, her mother Mrs. McKee, and later Mr. Hutton. A resident of the Hutton Funeral Home for more than 30 years, Norma left in 2003 to care for her brother who was in declining health. In 2006, she became a resident of Windsor Care Center in Mount Sterling where she met new friends and remained until her death.

Services will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Hutton Funeral Home with the Rev. James Paul Humphries and Brother Gerald Saunders officiating.

Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brian Hester, Kenney Gulley, Ben Gulley, Jim Sauer, Jewell Call, Stevie Call, Benny McDonald, Gerald Saunders, and William Thompson.

He was born April 28, 1931, in Fleming County to the late Dennis R. Lowe Sr. and Alma Davis Lowe Duff.

He was a retired construction worker and farmer .

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lena May Lowe in February 2008.

Oscar Helphenstine Jr., born April 16, 1930, passed away March 24, 2011, at Fleming County Hospital.

He was a retired carpenter.

Oscar was the son of the late Oscar and Lennie Helphenstine Sr.

He was proceeded in death by son, Keith Helphenstine; and brother, Roy Helphenstine.

He is survived by his children, Danny (Kathy) Helphenstine of Tollesboro, and Connie (Jackie) Williamson of Flemingsburg . He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dana (Roger) Gulley, Michael (Melissa) Williamson and Jeff Williamson of Flemingsburg, and Brian (Teresa) Helphenstine and Chris (Julie) Helphenstine of Tollesboro. He is survived by great-grandchildren, Britani, Michelle, Carley Gulley, Brandon Williamson, Alexis and Tate Williamson, Tierra Tulley and Bryson Helphenstine; two brothers, Ronnie Helphenstine of Tollesboro, and William Helphenstine of Florida; and a sister, Mary Grayson of Pennsylvania. Charles Walter Burton, 75, of Ewing, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Nicholas County Hospital.

He was born Feb. 19, 1936, in Mason County to the late Edgar and Stella Burton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Tootsie Burton.

He was a chef for S&S Cafeterias and served in the United States Army.

He is survived by four sons, Mike (Bonnie) Burton, Jim (Polly) Burton, Gary Burton and Tony Burton, all of Ewing; two daughters, Marcie Jandro and Julie Burton, both of Ewing; 12 grandchildren, Christie Burton, Cole Burton, Regina Fulton, Tina and Trista Jandro, Tiffany Taylor, Bobby, Jonothan and Casey Burton, Derek McFarland, Megan Burton and Tabitha Abner; and one great-grandchild, Keagan Florence.

Micheal Everett Pence, age 50, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at his sister’s home.

Born November 9, 1960, in Morehead, Kentucky, he is the son of Phyllis Messer Pence of Morehead and the late Ollie Hayse Pence. One brother, David Pence, also preceded him in death.

In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by his wife, Erin Ishmeal Pence, and three stepsons, Waylon, Caleb and Bo Crawford of Morehead; a son, Scott McClurg of Olive Hill, Kentucky; a daughter, Tara Brooke of Indiana; two brothers, Mark Pence of Morehead and Rick Pence of Wallingford, Kentucky; one sister, Lisa Pence of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was a former bricklayer and enjoyed being with family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James DeAtley officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

He was a farmer all of his life and was of the Catholic faith. He was a Korean war veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Cecilia Berry.

Bessie Deloris Sloas, 82, of Flemingsburg passed away Saturday morning, March 19, 2011, at Fleming County Hospital after a short illness.

She was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Sandy Hook, to the late Green and Nan Howard Stamper.

She was the owner and operator of Sloas Grocery in Goddard for 20 years before retiring in 1982. She attended the Bluebank United Methodist Church and loved playing bingo in Flemingsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Sloas; six brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Luella (Roger) Utterback of Mount Carmel, and Justine (Steve) Allen of Fox Valley; a sisters, Melba Barker of Flemingsburg; four grandchildren, Connie (Reeves) Anderson of Ewing, Shawnda (Thomas) Lasword of Morehead, Earl Reeves of Flemingsburg, and Shane Thomas of Morehead; two step-grandchildren, David (Miranda) Utterback of Mount Carmel, and Chris Allen of Owingsville; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

She had retired from U.S. Shoe Corp after 35 years of service, had worked at Pepsi for 10 years and was also a bookkeeper in her home. She was a member of Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Christine Jeanette Mitchell Atkinson, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at the Fleming County Hospital, Flemingsburg.

She was born in Nicholas County on Oct. 3, 1919, to the late Thomas and Josie Mitchell Tout.

She was educated in Nicholas County and also attended Midway School in Midway, where she was crowned the May Queen.

Jeanette met and married John Lewis Thomas of Midway, where they made their home for several years. They were blessed with a son, John Mitchell Thomas. Later the family moved to Danville, Va., where Mr. Thomas was employed by P. Lorillard Tobacco Company. In failing health for several months, Mr. Thomas died in 1973. In time Jeanette met and later married William E. "Buck" Atkinson Jr., a native of Maysville. They made their home in Lexington and spent much time traveling, entertaining and following the Kentucky Wildcats. They lived life to the fullest until Mr. Atkinson passed in 2000, at the age of 90.

Jeanette later moved to Flemingsburg to live near her sister, Irene Barber. She soon made friends and became a member of the Fleming County Hospital Auxiliary, a sewing group and a member of the Flemingsburg Christian Church.

Jeanette was an avid golfer and a member of the Lexington Country Club. She was an extremely gifted seamstress making many beautiful quilts. She loved playing bridge but above all this she was a great friend, loving mother, a devoted wife, an appreciative sister, with a heart of gold and a Southern charm that twinkled in her beautiful eyes.

Jeanette leaves to mourn her passing, one dear sister, Irene Barber of Flemingsburg; a nephew, Eric (Naomi) Barber of Lexington; two nieces, Mary Ann (Rick) Storm and Martha Jean Cox, both of Carlisle; one step-daughter, Florence (Ralph) Scearce of Lexington; one step-son, Tarley (Ann) Thomas of Lexington; two step-granddaughters, Tarla Thomas and Patricia Thomas; two very special care-givers whom she loved like family, Linda Rayburn and Debbie Sapp.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her step-father, Homer Tout; her husbands, John L. Thomas and William E. Atkinson; one son, John Mitchell Thomas; a brother, Harold Mitchell; two nieces, Judy Letcher and Janet (Susie) Brown; and a step-son, Jay Thomas.

Services are 1 p.m., today, March 10, 2011, at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Rolland Gayheart, age 72, of Sunset Road, Hillsboro, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at his residence.

Born October 26, 1938, in Floyd County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Vester and Bertha Cook Gayheart. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Dye; one daughter, Theda Gayheart Walters; and one grandson, Gregory Todd Walters.

His wife, Gertrude Dye Gayheart, passed away October 22, 1996.

Rolland is survived by one son, Hank Junior Gayheart and his wife Gail of Hillsboro, Kentucky; two daughters, Patty Cole of Waterford, Michigan, and Rolleen Bentley of Allen, Kentucky; one brother and one sister, Bethel Gayheart and Ethel Gayheart, both of McDowell, Kentucky; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Gayheart had been a coal miner and farmer.

Born August 26, 1935, in Nicholas County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late George and Oma Pearl Vance Bussell. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Clarene Margaret Brooks, and three brothers, Gano “Buck” Terrell Bussell, Claude “Fuzzy” Hones Bussell, and Ollie Jay Bussell.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Edna Dale Bussell, whom he married November 19, 1960; one daughter, Denise Hawkins and husband Jamie of Hillsboro, Kentucky; one son, Dennis Bussell of Hillsboro, Kentucky, four grandchildren, Joshua Scott Hawkins, Kayla Raye Hawkins, Ethan Lane Hawkins, and Madison Taylor Hawkins; and one great grandson, Kevin Tyler Raye Lee.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Belle Hardin and Lola B. Davis, and one brother, Vernon Lee Bussell, all of Nicholas County, Kentucky.

Alvin was a former carpenter for the W. Rogers Construction Company in Lexington and a farmer.

Lorene "Janie" Helphenstine, 55 passed away Friday, March 4, 2011 in Mason County.

She was born in Fleming County Nov. 18, 1955 to the late Albert and Lillian Gray McFarland.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry McFarland and J.R. McFarland.

She is survived by a daughter, Tonya (Raplh) Davenport of Indiana; and two grandsons, Braxton and Braydon Davenport.

He was a laborer for Emerson Electric, a farmer, substitute mail carrier for 12 years, and a member of the Mount Carmel Christian Church. He loved his Allis Chalmer tractors, enjoyed mowing and gardening, flea markets, yard sales, and enjoyed traveling with his family, as well as going out to eat.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma Hunt Marshall; a daughter, Jeanie (Wayne) Strode of Fleming County; a grandchild, Buffey (James) Rawlings of Fleming County; two great-grandchildren, Maverick and Levi Rawlings of Fleming County; and a sister, Ruby Camron of Rockford, Ohio.

Lawrence Eugene Steinbruegge, 68, of Farris Branch, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, in Wallingford.

He was born Jan. 5, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo.

He was a staff sergeant and retired from the U.S. Army and Marines.

He received a honorable discharge from the Vietnam War with the highest rank of E-6; Air Force rating of E-6 and entered the service in January of 1977 in Louisville and was dismissed May 1981 from Fort Campbell.

Michele Lynn Planck, 31, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at University of Kentucky Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 2, 1980, in Rowan County. She was a 1998 graduate of Fleming County High School.

She was preceded in death by grandparents Lois Thompson, Doug Botkin, James and Lavada McGinnis.

Jerry Wayne Vice, 64, of Tilton Road, Flemingsburg died Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at his residence.

Mr. Vice was born Jan. 14, 1947, in Mason County to the late Floyd Vice of Bath County and Frances Dudley Jordan Vice of Mason County.

Mr. Vice was a lifelong resident of Flemingsburg and Tollesboro.

A 1965 graduate of Tollesboro High School, Mr. Vice played basketball for the Tollesboro Wildcats from 1962 to 1965. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. Mr. Vice was the former owner and operator of Vice's Valley View Service Station in Flemingsburg and owned Vice's Trucking.He was an auto mechanic and truck driver. He enjoyed late model car racing and owned the white V1 car and loved to listen to gospel music. He attended Tilton Christian Church.

Mr. Vice is survived by two children, Timothy Vice of Flemingsburg and Shea Vice (Kristian Ishmael) of Louisville; four grandchildren, Courtney Nicole Vice, Shannon Justice, Shane Vice and Nathaniel Humfleet; two brothers, Danny (Mary Lynn) Vice of Fleming County and Stephen (Edna) Vice of Tollesboro; two sisters, Sandra (Donnie) Gilbert of Maysville and Pamela (Tim) Perkins of Tollesboro; and several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by four daughters, Maudie Marie (Mitch) Christie of New Mexico, Ruby (Jerry) Cooper of Dover, Carla Manning of Aberdeen, Ohio, and Cynthia (Greg) Blanton of Flemingsburg; his sons, Darrell Davis of Ashland, Dale Davis of Bald Hill, and Dwayne (Brenda) Davis of Flemingsburg; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Manning and Anna Lee Doyle of Flemingsburg.

Ervin Paul "Jack" Basford, 81, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, peacefully at home.

He was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Rowan County, to the late John and Iva Braggs Basford.

He was the widower of Ruth Ann Williams Basford, whom he was married to for 44 years.

Jack was a retired logger and was employed at Randall's for several years. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family. He attended Plummers Landing Christian Church.

He was born April 12, 1940, and leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Phyllis Fryman.

He was preceded in death by his parents Woodrow and Almedia Fryman; a brother, Cecil Fryman; a sister, Patsy Mitchell; and a grandson, Jeromy Keith Fryman.

Woodie Fryman

Woodie Fryman, who pitched 18 seasons in the major leagues and was inducted into the Montreal Expos' Hall of Fame in 1995, has died. He was 70.

Fryman won 141 games from 1966-83 with the Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. He pitched primarily in relief late in his career, saving 17 games for Montreal in 1980.

Fryman had four career one-hitters — including a nearly perfect game when he was a Pittsburgh rookie. He gave up a leadoff hit to the New York Mets, the runner was caught stealing and Fryman didn't allow anyone else on base.

In 1972, Fryman joined the Tigers in the middle of the season and went 10-3 with a 2.06 ERA for them, helping Detroit win the American League East.

Fryman's death Friday night was confirmed by Price Brothers Funeral Home in Elizaville, Kentucky.

Thomas Dee “Tom” Parish, age 49, of Lexington, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born June 7, 1961, in Morehead, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Dee and Frankie Thompson Parish.

Tom is survived by one sister, Elaine (Rick) Keller of Hillsboro, Kentucky; three brothers, Bob Thompson of Bellevue, Michigan, Art (Donna) Parish of Owingsville, Kentucky, and Ron Parish of Owingsville, Kentucky; several nieces; a nephew; other family and friends.

Tom graduated from Rowan County Senior High School in 1979 and enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing, hiking and camping.

A memorial service will be conducted 7 p.m. Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Salt Lick Freewill Baptist Church with Pastor Andy Lands officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Church.

Mrs. Denton

Maxine Barber Denton, 98, of Hillsboro, a teacher, community and church leader, and devoted mother and grandmother, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2011, at her home.

Born Oct. 29, 1912, in Bath County, she was the middle child of the late Everett and Lutie Thompson Barber. The family, including Maxine’s four siblings, moved to Fleming County in 1918.

Maxine attended a one-room school in Grange City and graduated from Fleming County High School in 1932. She was the recipient of the Carnegie Medal of Honor for her heroic efforts in saving the life of her uncle and his son, and received a $500 scholarship, which she used to complete her education at Morehead State University.

Except for one year when she was a music teacher in Bentonville, Ohio, Maxine taught in the Fleming County schools from 1933 until 1984. She began her diversified career in a one-room school in Arnold’s Chapel teaching children from four years of age to 14. Two years later she moved to the Hillsboro School, which consisted of four rooms and was later replaced with the current Hillsboro Elementary School. In addition to teaching grades four through eight during the course of her career, Maxine found time to teach art and music, volunteered to coach boys’ basketball, and served as principal. She was responsible for organizing the first PTA in Hillsboro and served as president. She also held leadership positions in local, state, and national education associations, as well as Delta Kappa Gamma Honorary Teacher Society.

Maxine was extremely active in community organizations. She was a member of the first Board of Directors of Fleming County Hospital. She, along with other members of the board, worked tirelessly to establish the hospital, retiring from the board in 1985. Maxine and her husband, Ashton were instrumental in organizing the Hillsboro Fire Department. She was a member of the Fire Board and served as secretary and treasurer until 2001.

Through the years, Maxine was also active in many Fleming County organizations including the 4-H, Historical Society, Homemakers, Farmers Home Administration Board, American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Order of Eastern Star A. P. Gooding 172, Women’s Advisory Council for Southern States, March of Dimes and Polio Foundation. She was elected Mrs. Fleming County in 1955, served as the Grand Marshall of Hillsboro Homecoming Parade in 1994, and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Maxine and Ashton enjoyed their travels throughout the United States and six continents. Australia and China were among her favorites.

She was involved in church activities throughout her lifetime. She taught Sunday school, Bible school, and youth groups and taught piano and played for church services and was a member of Hillsboro Christian Church.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers: Glenna Christine Smoot, Everett Barber Jr., Eugene Barber and Archie Clark Barber. Maxine’s husband of 43 years, Ashton Lyle Denton, passed away Dec. 16, 1980.

Mrs. Denton is survived by one daughter, Glenna Denton Peterson and husband, Gene of Hillsboro; one son, James Denton and wife, Jeannette of Georgetown; two grandchildren, Joseph Bumgardner and wife, Tammy and Sarah Lyle Marshall and husband, Corbin; and one great-granddaughter, Ashton Lee Bumgardner.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at Hillsboro Christian Church with the Rev. Jim Hamm officiating.

Eunice Staggs McIntosh passed away Jan. 27, 2011, at the age of 94, in the Fleming County Hospital.

Eunice was born in Wallingford on July 28, 1916, the daughter of Early and Artecia Hickerson Staggs.

She was married for 53 years to Ora Dale McIntosh who preceded her in death.

Eunice is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary McIntosh Hughes and Russell Hughes; daughter-in-law, Sara Wilson McIntosh; sister, June Staggs Moore; sister-in-law, Clarice Staggs; grandchildren, Julie Vice Morris and Mark Morris, Angela Hughes Stice and Jim Stice, Natalie Hughes Keller and Eric Keller; great-grandchildren, Justin Morris, Ryann and Ethan Keller and Tyler and Owen Stice, as well as beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were three brothers, Roy, Estill and Gene Staggs; one sister, Ruth Staggs Thomas; two children, Judy Ruth McIntosh and John Thomas (Buddy) McIntosh; and three grandchildren, Allen Dale McIntosh, Katherine Marie McIntosh and Donald Howard (Howie) Vice.

Brent Carter, age 24 of Veterans Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, formerly of Fleming County, passed away Thursday, January 20, 2011, at the Community Hospice Care in Ashland, Kentucky, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident on July 11, 2009, in Carter County.

He was born December 2, 1986 in Rowan County, Kentucky, and is the son of Tina Hamm Walton and husband Bobby of Morehead, Kentucky, and Calvin Carter of West Liberty.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Harlie Carter of Bath County, two sisters, Michelle Carter of Olive Hill, and Allison Walton of Morehead, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. One son, Dakota Carter, preceded him in death.

Brent was a former construction worker as a concrete finisher and attended Fleming County High School. He also enjoyed 4-wheeling.

Funeral services were conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Don Rivers officiating. Burial followed in Glenwood Hollow Cemetery.

Pallbearers were John Purvis, Ben Hamm, Johnny Reed, Donnie Jones, Matthew Ramey, and Travis Hamm.

Mr. Dye

Omar Frank Dye, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at Fleming County Hospital.

He was born June 12, 1934, to the late Leland and Rettie Belle Dye.

He was a lifelong farmer raising over 56 crops of tobacco.

He was married to the former Madeline F. Ackley in May of 1974.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Evelyn Dye Helphenstine and Margaret Black

Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at the New Life Church of Christ with Bro. Darrin Fizer and Bro. Hillary Underwood officiating.

Mrs. Pogue

Naomi Lee Ross Pogue, 94, a resident of the Maysville Nursing & Rehab Facility passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011 at the facility. She was a former resident of Fairview in Fleming Co. and a longtime resident of May’s Lick. She was a retired cook at the Thorobred Inn in May’s Lick and the widow of John W. “Pete” Pogue.

Mrs. Pogue was born in Mason County on June 16, 1916 daughter of the late Robert & Lula Frederick Ross.

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved crafting to give to family and friends and recently made bracelets for children in the ward at U.K. Hospital. She was a Kentucky Colonel.

Survivors include a daughter Louise (Orville W.) Miller of Fairview and 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son Robert A. Pogue and 3 brothers and 6 sisters.

Pauline Fearin, 82, of Foxport died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati.

She was a housewife, farmer and a member of Pleasant Valley Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Thomas "Buddy" Fearin.

Mrs. Fearin was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Mason County, the daughter of the late Eugene and Nellie Hurst Lightner.

Survivors include a sister, Emma Jea Emmons of Fleming County; three grandchildren, Greta (Lester) Hall and Jennifer (David) Cox, both of Fleming County, and Kevin (Teresa) Callahan of Lewis County; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Leslie Lewis of Fleming County.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Peggy Callahan.

Services are 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Denton-Workman Funeral Home with Bro. Hillary Underwood officiating.

Julie Ann O’Connor Reeves, age 32, of Wallingford, Kentucky, passed away Friday, January 7, 2011, in Lexington, Kentucky, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born October 27, 1978, in Morehead, Kentucky, she is the daughter of Julie Catherine “Cathy” Whitt O’Connor of Morehead and the late Daniel Howard O’Connor. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Edgar and Dorothy Whitt and John and Nancy Howard O’Connor.

In addition to her mother, Julie is survived by her husband, Donnie Reeves; one son, Ransom Reeves, and three daughters, Lakyn, Klara, and Scarlet Reeves; one sister, Donna Wilson of Morehead; three brothers, Daniel O’Connor of Morehead, Steve O’Connor and Ronnie O’Conner, both of West Liberty; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Julie was a former salesperson for Ashley Furniture and Furniture World in Lexington.

Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Howard Lee Whitt officiating. Burial will follow in the Adkins-Whitt Cemetery in Wrigley.

She was born Jan. 27, 1967, in Mason County, the daughter of Dorothy Reeves of Goddard and the late Woodrow Reeves.

Michael "Mike" Day, 58, of Mount Olivet, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Nicholas County Hospital in Carlisle.

He was formerly a bus driver for the city of Manchester, England.

Mr. Day was born Aug. 21, 1952, in Salford, England, the son of Marjorie Harding Day of England and the late Frank Day.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Melinda Ballingal; five children, David (Michelle) Day of Fleming County, Stephen (Tricia) Day of England, Thomas (Bec) Day of Australia, Isaac (Melissa) Sapp of Fleming County, and Heather (Andy) Plummer of Philadelphia; two brothers, Francis (June) Day and Robert (Deborah) Day, both of England; a sister, Marjorie (Stephen) Day Massey of England; and six grandchildren, Chloe, Jimmy, Lainey, D.J., Jack and Emmalee.

Neva Hamilton Ishmael, age 66, of Hillsboro Road, Hillsboro, passed away Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood.

She was born April 14, 1944, on Mud Sock Road in Fleming County, and was the daughter of the late Lander and Lillie Mae Dailey Hamilton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James Hamilton, Clarence "Bud" Hamilton, Leland "Buck" Hamilton and Robert Lee "Bob" Hamilton; and three sisters, Lillian Vice, Pearl Thacker and Milda Moore.

Neva is survived by her husband of 47 years, Albert A. "Ab" Ishmael, Sr., whom she married Oct. 9, 1963; one son, Albert "Hookie" Ishmael Jr. and wife, Fonda of Hillsboro; one daughter, Barbara "Puddin" Ishmael Mercer and fiancé, Michael J. Hunt of Hillsboro; four grandchildren, Ryan Ishmael (Marissa Marshall), Andrew Ishmael (Ashley Easton), Brittany Ishmael (Jeremy Hunt) and Brandon Mercer and wife, Vada; and four great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include two brothers, Andy Hamilton and wife, Linda, and Richard "Rich" Hamilton and wife, Mary Helen, all of Flemingsburg; one sister, Cora Shields and husband, Johnny of Flemingsburg; several nieces and nephews; and many former co-workers, auction family and special friends.

Neva was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She retired from Pioneer Trace Nursing Home where she dedicated many years of service to helping others. She was also co-owner of Hillsboro Auction House and enjoyed collecting collectibles and antiques, gardening and flowers.

Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Hutton Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Boling and Bro. Gerald Saunders officiating.

Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jake Schlabach, Jimmy Skaggs, Brien Ferguson, Millard Holbrook, David Hamilton, Bobby Hamilton, Scott Mercer, Jack Mahone, Jeff Hay, and Donald Kilgore. Honorary pallbearers will be her nephews.

Frances Louise (Garey) Williams, 92, of Country Lane, Flemingsburg died, Thursday, Dec. 30, at Maysville Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born June 16, 1918, in Fleming County, she was the widow of Roy Williams Sr.

A housewife, she was a member of Elizaville Christian Church where she served as Sunday school teacher, pianist and organist for many years. She was a retired real estate broker and a partner with Roy Williams Real Estate and Auctioneering. She was a volunteer at Fleming County Hospital Auxiliary; a member of Fleming County Homemakers and Busy Bee Homemaking Club. She was a member of the Kentucky Heritage Quilters Society; her special interest was quilting with her friends.

She is survived by sons, R.C (Margaret Keightly) Williams Jr. of Flemingsburg and Steve (Patricia) Williams of Lexington; sister, Mary Lois Larr of Michigan; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; sister-in-law, Margaret Garey of Flemingsburg; nephews Dennis Garey and Roger Garey, both of Flemingsburg; and two nieces and nephews from out of state.

She was preceded in death by her parents Bessie Garey and Riblen Garey.

Services are 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Denton-Workman Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Norman Wasson.

Burial will be in Elizaville Cemetery.

Visitation is noon until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Wagner was born June 23, 1956, in Mason County, the son of Maurice and Wanda Poynter Wagner of Foxport.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Christopher Wagner of Fleming County; two daughters, Staci Wagner and Donna Wagner, both of Tampa, Fla.; a brother, Layne (Stephanie) Wagner of Fleming County; three sisters, Lisa (Billy) Rigdon and Cheryl (Marty) Roberts, both of Fleming County, and Kristi (John) Carter of Lithia, Fla.; three grandchildren, Desiree Hill, Ryan Ferguson and Donavon Wagner; and his companion of 36 years, Brenda Prater Wagner.

Richard Earl Reed, Jr., age 54, of Maxey Flat Road, Hillsboro, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2010, at the V. A. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Born May 26, 1956, in Covington, Kentucky, he is the son of Wynema Reed of Hillsboro, Kentucky, and Richard Earl Reed, Sr., who passed away October 17, 1997. He was also preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Reed, and one daughter, Jessica Reed.

In addition to his mother, Rick is also survived by one son, Joseph Reed of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; one daughter, Angela Reed of Orlando, Florida; one stepdaughter, Nettie Rose Jolly of Muses Mill, Kentucky; two brothers, Ronald D. Reed of Anchorage, Alaska, and Roger Dale Reed of Alexandria, Kentucky; and four sisters, Debora Lynn Hamilton of Morehead, Kentucky, Carol Ford of Salt Lick, Kentucky, Sharon Kay Williams of Maxey Flat, Kentucky, and Donna Louise Crum of Morehead, Kentucky.

Other survivors include several grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Rick served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Era. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed all of nature—especially hunting, fishing, and camping—and spending time with his family and friends.

Funeral services were conducted 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Winston McClurg and the Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Prince Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

She was the widow of James Hurd.

Dorothy was a retired secretary and co-owner of Shannon and Hurd Construction Company, former co-owner of Crestview Mobile Home Park and Southridge Plaza Shopping Center, former co-owner of BSH Cattle Company, co-owner of Lakeview Farm and longtime member of Flemingsburg Baptist Church and former member of Foxport Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Patty (Clyde) Atherton; one son, Steve (Ramona) Hurd, both of Flemingsburg; six grandchildren, Laura and Lindsay Atherton, Natalie (Darren) Pettit, Emily, Stuart Hurd; three brothers, Mark (June) Dillon, Jerry (Jean) Dillon and Barry Dillon, all of Fleming County; three sisters, Alberta Barker of Fleming County, Wanda (James) Owens of Cincinnati, and Judy Denton of Flemingsburg; one sister-in-law, Peggy Dillon of Cincinnati; one brother-in-law, Ed Post of Erie, Penn.; and mother-in-law, Rose Hurd of Erlanger.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amanda Blair Hurd; a brother, Mark Dillon; and a sister, Ruth Post.

Robert Kenneth (Bob) Nealis, age 77, of Hillsboro, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, December 25, 2010, at the V. A. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Born December 24, 1933, in Hillsboro, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Durbin and Gertrude Likes Nealis. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Frank Berman Nealis on March 9, 1991, and a sister, Pauline Likes Nealis Harmon, on July 20, 2001.

Bob is survived by a sister, Norma Nealis; a niece, Kim Harmon Hester of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; a great niece, Jennifer Hester Gulley and husband Kenney of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; a great nephew, Brian Thomas Hester of Wallingford, Kentucky; and great-great nephew Benjamin Gulley and great-great niece Abigail Gulley, both of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.

Bob served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War. He retired from the Physical Plant at Morehead State University and was the owner of Denton Mercantile and Rock Lick Grocery.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, December 30, 2010, at the Hutton Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr., and Brother Gerald Saunders officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Flemingsburg Franklin Sousley V.F.W. Post 1834 and American Legion Post No. 5.

Pallbearers will be Jim Sauer, Jewell Call, Steve Call, Kenney Gulley, William Thompson, and Brian Hester.

He was born Aug. 10, 2009, in Lexington, the son of William Patrick and Janet Crawford Wigginton.

On addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Aubrey Layne Wigginton; his paternal grandparents, Jay and Sue Wigginton of Flemingsburg; his maternal grandparents, Laura and Bill Brown of Flemingsburg; and his great-grandparents, Marion and Alma Crawford of Hillsboro and Woodie Mitchell of Flemingsburg.

Ruby Carr Prather Brandy, 87, died Dec. 6, 2010, at her home in Cincinnati surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late George Early and Lizzie Carr Prather of Flemingsburg.

She was a graduate of John G. Fee High School in Maysville and retired from the Westin Hotel in Cincinnati. She was married to the late Robert Squire Brandy. To this union, 11 children were born.

She accepted Christ at an early age at Strawberry United Methodist Church which was founded by her grandfather, the late Robert Carr. She was a member of Hope Temple Church in Cincinnati.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers, Lake Taylor, Allie Taylor, Frank Taylor, and Robert "Marion" Prather; a sister, Annie Lee Taylor; two sons, Robert Squire Brandy Jr. and Donald Brandy; a baby girl, and a special friend, Mary Alice Bush.

She leaves to cherish her memory, Deloris Brandy, Newell Brandy, Wilma Foster, Calvin (Deborah) Brandy, Pastor Paula (Brodmon) Drakeford, Kenneth Brandy, Vincent (Robin) Brandy and Julia Brandy, all of Cincinnati; a brother, Calbert Prather of Flemingsburg; 30 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

Warren Garnette Hawkins, 77, of Tilton, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 in Hillsboro.

He was born July 8, 1933 to the late William Hawkins and Imogene Carter Hawkins.

Warren served in the Korean Conflict for the United States Army. He was a window washer for the Chicago Board of Education.

He is survived by two daughters, Victoria (Anthony) Ball of Wallingford and Debbie Hawkins; a sister, Barbara Hankin of Chicago.; three grandchildren, Rory (Shawna) Strahm II, Sgt. Shea (Tiffany) Hawkins and Chris Hawkins; three great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Phyllis Moeller of Tilton.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George Hawkins and William Hawkins.

She was born on Aug. 21, 1963 to Arthur Thomas and Mabel Reed Sexton in Flemingsburg.

She graduated from Fleming County High School in 1981. She was in ROTC at Morehead State University where she earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial technology. She also served in the Kentucky Guard and was a Quartermaster Officer in the Maysville Army Reserve Unit. She received additional training in robotics at Miami University and worked for Bushman Conveyor, Henny Penny and Huffy. Connie earned a licensed practical nurse degree from Butler Tech in June of 2004. She excelled in this field and truly devoted herself to her patients. She currently worked at Southwest Home Health as a Home Health Nurse providing comfort and care to disabled children.

Survivors include a twin sister, Bonnie Sexton (Robb Jensen) of Woodbridge, Va.; sisters, Brenda Sexton-Cooper of Hillsboro and Judy (Chris) Muse of Wallingford; her life partner of 18 years, Gina Gentile of Hamilton, Ohio; two nephews, Samuel Muse of Flemingsburg and Austin Williams of Hillsboro; an uncle, Roy Cleadith (Helena) Reed of Portland, Ind.; as well as several cousins.

She was preceded in death by a nephew, Jeremiah Lee Muse; and a brother-in-law, Rick Cooper; as well as her parents and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

A memorial service will follow visitation at 6 p.m. Monday at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Wilma Mae Kilgore Mabry, age 62, of Pond Lick Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, December 16, 2010, at her residence.

She was born March 29, 1948, in Lewis County, Kentucky, and was the daughter of the late Robert and Parthena Logan Kilgore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Otha Kilgore.

Her husband, Dewey Earl Mabry, preceded her in death on September 1, 1994.

Mrs. Mabry is survived by two sons, James “Jim” Mabry and wife Ronnica of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and Mark Mabry of Morehead, Kentucky; five brothers, Virgil Kilgore, Kermit Kilgore, Joe Kilgore, and Troy Kilgore, all of Lewis County, and Vernon Kilgore of Carter County; three sisters, Mary Kelsey of Lewis County, Wanda Wagoner and Debra Enix, both of Carter County; one granddaughter, Brianna Mabry; and honorary granddaughter, Nikita Dell.

Mrs. Mabry was a homemaker, a caregiver, and former employee of Chef America in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. She enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers. She was of the Church of God Faith.

Funeral services were conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Rev. John Jordan officiating. Burial was in the Mabry Cemetery.

Born May 14, 1926, in Sharkey, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Willis and Grace Caudill Gregory. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Amanda Eldridge; two brothers, Jesse Gregory and Junior Gregory; her first husband, Avery Prater; and one son, Earl Gene Prater.

Mrs. McKee is survived by her husband, William Fay McKee, whom she married December 15, 1973; two grandchildren, April and Chris Smith of Morehead, Kentucky, and Heather and Bruce Hamilton of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; four great grandchildren, Kevin Tyler Smith, Taylor LeShae Smith, Jeffery Lee Plank, and Johnathan Lynn Henderson; one stepson, Scott McKee of Sevierville, Tennessee; and one stepdaughter, Betty Ann Crowder of Columbus, Ohio.

Mrs. McKee was a homemaker and former employee of the U.S. Shoe Factory in Flemingsburg, Kentucky. She was of the Baptist faith.

James Marshall Hinton, 85, of Chestnut Cemetery Road, London died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at Laurel Heights Nursing Home in London.

Mr. Hinton was born Monday, April 6, 1925 in Fleming County, son of the late James and Ruby Thompson Hinton.

Mr. Hinton was a brick layer for Morgan and Tile Co. as well as an U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was a prisoner of war in 1943 for five and a half months.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hinton was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam Hinton, Skeeter Hinton and Russell Hinton; and two sisters, Aletha Tumey and Thelma (Tootsie) Burton.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wedonia Cemetery with interment to follow.

Philip was retired from Lunkenhiemer Valve Company where he worked as a draftsman and also retired from Century Club Car Golf Cart Company where he worked as a mechanic. He was a Christian by Faith and a member of the Maysville Fraternal Order of the Eagles. Philip was born July 22, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana the son of the late Woodrow and Ruth (Stafford) McCord. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by is wife Etta Jo (Mitchell) McCord in 1984, one sister – Roberta (Pyles) Kinner, one sister in-law – Irene Pyles and one nephew – John Pyles, Jr.

Donnie is survived by his wife, Wilma Humphries Sloas; three sons, Alan Sloas and wife Mary of Jackson, Kentucky, Greg Sloas of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, and Rodney Cummings and wife Heather of Hillsboro, Kentucky; one daughter, Stephanie Smith and husband Mark of Ewing, Kentucky; and five grandchildren.

Also surviving are three sisters, Elizabeth Wagner and husband John of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, Jolene Brown and husband Gene of Morehead, Kentucky, and Jeri Wagner and husband Mike of Plummers Landing, Kentucky, and several nieces, nephews and other family members.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lou Spurlock, and one infant son, Barry Bryan Burke. Her first husband, John Bunyan “J. B.” DeBord, passed away in 1960; and her second husband, Cleo Burke, in 1998.

Mrs. Burke is survived by three daughters, Lillian Ruth Fawns of Flemingsburg, Kentucky, Vivian Kay Kemp and husband Robert of Ewing, Kentucky, and Linda Sue Gray and husband Riley of Westfield, Indiana; two sons, John David DeBord and wife Carol of Morehead, Kentucky, and Larry Gale Burke of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; four brothers, Carl Kissick, John Kissick and wife Ruby, and Homer Kissick and wife Barbara, all of Hillsboro, Kentucky, and Ronald Kissick of Muncie, Indiana; and one sister, Zona Shelley of Hillsboro, Kentucky.

Betty Walton Howe, 77, of Grange City, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at the Flemingsburg Pioneer Trace Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Aug. 12, 1933, in Fleming County to the late Noel Walton and Mary E. Walton.

Betty taught in the Fleming County School System, was a member of the Grange City Christian Church and a member of the Eastern Star Rebekah Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howe.

She is survived by her son, Jeff Howe of Lexington; two daughters, Jacquelyn (Billy) McCord and Jan (Chuck) Brown, both of Flemingsburg; a sister, Nancy Corbin of Ewing; four grandchildren, Cyle Hazelrigg of Flemingsburg, Blake Brown of Memphis, Tenn., Adam McCord and Daniel McCord of Fleming County; and one great-grandchild, Hadlee Ray Hazelrigg.

Services are 11 a.m., Friday at the Grange City Christian Church. Rev. David Barnett and Bro. Randy Hawkins will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery, Hillsboro.

Jennie Alice Gray, 83, lost her battle with cancer on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at her home.

Jennie was born on April 4, 1927, in Fleming County to the late Elmer and Mabel Hughes Mitchell.

She was the wife of the late Henry Jasper Gray.

She leaves behind her sons, Stanley (Anita White) Gray, Roy Lee (Bonnie) Gray, Billy Joe Gray and David Gray; a daughter-in-law, Willadean Gray; a devoted brother, William "Bunky" Mitchell, and a very special niece, Patty Ann Evans; grandchildren, Jimmy Gray, Jennifer Bradford (Chris Weber), Vera (Rusty) Bryant, Jody Gray, Tammy (Jeff) Fryman, Sherry (David) Christiansen, Patty (David) Cropper, Susan (Gordon) Pepper, Rachel (Troy) Emmons, Miranda (Matt) Mers, Jeffery Gray and Cheyenne Gray; 20 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Jennie will forever be remembered as a genuine woman and also as a strong woman of God.

Besides her husband and parents, Jennie was preceded in death by her sons, Cecil Gray, Cleve Gray and Rennie Clay Gray; her grandson, Jeromy Keith Fryman; a daughter-in-law, Helen Shrout Gray; her brother, Elmer "Buddy" Mitchell; and her sisters, Dorothy Mitchell, Evelyn Mitchell, Jettie Evans and Artie Ishmael.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at the Pleasant Ridge Christian Church in Cowan with the Rev. Jeff Greene officiating.

She will be laid to rest at the Elizaville Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. today Dec, 1, 2010 at the church. Pallbearers will be her great-grandsons, Derrick Jones, Shaun Fryman, Michael Gray, Dylan Emmons, Tyler Jones, Bradley Gray, Cole Christiansen, Trey Fryman and Aaron Christiansen. George Mason Graves Jr., 66, of Flemingsburg went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, after an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 20, 1944, to the late George Mason Graves Sr. and Onie Graves.

He was a member of the Wallingford Christian Holiness Church.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Julia Maria Taylor Graves of Flemingsburg; two sons, George Mason Graves III of Flemingsburg and Lloyd (Nancy) of Madisonville; a daughter-in-law, Mendy Graves of Flemingsburg; two grandchildren, MaKayla and Devin Graves of Flemingsburg; two step-grandchildren, Gavin of Madisonville and Cheyenne of Flemingsburg; his longtime dog, Prissy; and two brothers, Paul (Christina) Graves of Indiana, and Joseph (Edna) Graves of Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; along with special friends, David and Lora Lee; and his extended church family and friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Edward Lee Graves; one brother, Carl Graves; and a sister, Ramona Dunaway.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today, Nov. 30, 2010, at the Wallingford Christian Holiness Church. Rev. Tom Redmon and Bro. Charlie Hamm will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery.

Vondal Ray Peyton, age 73, of Muses Mills Road, Wallingford, Kentucky, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 28, 2010, at his residence.

Born April 5, 1937, at Zag, Kentucky, in Morgan County, he was the son of the late Wesley Cletis Peyton and Carma Ethel Osborne Peyton.

He is survived by one daughter, Tiffany Dawn Smedley and husband Jason of Wallingford, Kentucky; five sisters, Gladys Trent of Morehead, Kentucky, Mary Peyton of New Brunswick, New Jersey, Fern McKinney of Camargo, Kentucky, Dimple Murphy and Norma Sommers, both of Fairland, Indiana.

Mr. Peyton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served his country during the Korean War from 1955 until 1963. He was a farmer and a former mechanic with Brogan’s Chevron.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Andy Lands officiating. Burial will follow in the Peyton Cemetery in Morgan County.

Pallbearers will be Rocky Shields, Roger McKinney, Dean McKinney, Tony McKinney, Ralph Cox, and Shawn Smedley. Honorary pallbearers will be David Hamm, Rob Puckett, Carl Walton, and Steve Shields.

Mr. Fannin

Cobern Dale Fannin of Forest Hills Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, prominent business owner, passed away Wednesday, November 24, 2010, at his residence.

Born November 16, 1936, in Sandy Hook, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Thurman and Eva Howard Fannin. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Boyd and Robert Fannin. His wife, Lynda Fulton Fannin, passed away August 16, 1990.

Cobern is survived by two daughters, Crissy Fannin Cunningham and husband Chase and Hope Fannin, all of Morehead, Kentucky; two stepdaughters, April Smith of Morehead, Kentucky, and Heather Prater of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; four step grandchildren; his sister-in-law and special friend Martha and his mother-in-law, Ruth Fulton.

Other survivors include two brothers, Clettis Fannin and James Fannin, both of Morehead, Kentucky; three sisters, Janet Fraley, Brenda Sheets, and Rita Griffith, all of Sandy Hook, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Ruth Flora, Roberta Eubanks, and Eda Vice, all of Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

Cobern served in the United States Marine Corps from 1957-60 and graduated from Morehead State University in 1969. He was the owner of Fannin’s Ashland, Fannin’s Econo Cleaners, Cobe’s Rentals and Sales, and Cobe’s Fishing Lake. He enjoyed watching U.K. basketball and NASCAR and loved taking care of his Yorkies.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Fannin and the Rev. Cecil Ison officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers will be his employees whom he appreciated so very much, John Wolfenbarger, Bob McClain, Ernie Debord, Lee Clark, Gene Barker, Tim Ison, and Larry Messer.

Delbert D. Collins, 85, of Flemingsburg, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 9, 1925, in Boyd County to the late Achie Collins Sr. and Amanda Hammons Collins.

He was a farmer and mechanic and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sylvia Turner Collins; one brother, Rev. Vernon (Bea) Collins of Englewood, Ohio; and one sister, Patricia Thaxton of West Liberty.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford Collins, Achie "Red" Collins Jr., and Kenneth Collins; and three sisters, Wanda Henry, Levawn Frisby, and Jannetta Fugett.

Services 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Denton-Workman Funeral Home with Rev. David Turner and Rev. Jerry Williams officiating. Burial in Fleming County Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by Flemingsburg VFW and American Legion.

Etta Ann Earls Graves, 95, of Flemingsburg died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at Pioneer Trace Nursing Home in Flemingsburg.

She was a homemaker, a volunteer at Fleming County Senior Citizens and the Fleming County Hospital Gift Shop and a Kentucky Colonel under Gov. Brereton Jones.

Mrs. Graves was born Oct. 7, 1915, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Marion and Ida Jane Caudill Earls.

She was the widow of Joseph Graves.

Survivors include a son, Roy (Mary) Graves of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Janice (Tommy) Vice of Hillsboro; two sisters, Ruth (Ray) Bovee of Melbourne, Fla., and Effie (Clay) Winters of New Lebanon, Ohio; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde Earls, Delmer Earls, Johnny Earls and Peyton Earls; and three sisters, Lillian Irvin, Bernice Raines and Stella Lyons.

Services are 12:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at Denton-Workman Funeral Home with Rev. Sandford Hill and Rev. Avery Earls officiating.

Burial will follow in the Elizaville Cemetery.

Visitation is 10 a.m. until services Friday at the funeral home.
