Mr. Taylor

Ronald James Taylor, 70, of Springfield, Ohio, formerly of Flemingsburg died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009.
He was an electrical engineer at D.P.& L. before his retirement. Ronald was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army.
He was born in Dayton, Ohio, Dec. 22, 1938, to the late Maurice and Gladys Crews Taylor.
His wife, Brenda Emmons Taylor, preceded him death in 2001.
He is survived by two sons, Michael (Hollie) Taylor of Washington D.C. and Ryan (Johnsie) Taylor of Dayton, Ohio; one brother, Carroll Maurice (Linda) Taylor of Fort Myers, Fla.; a granddaughter, Ainsley Grace Taylor; a grandson, Chase Emmons Taylor; and his mother-in-law, Evelyn Emmons.
Services at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the Boone - Nickell Funeral Home in Flemingsburg. Rev. George Sloan will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
Visitation is after 5 p.m., today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Williams

Brenda Kay Williams, 47, of Flemingsburg died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009, at her home.
She was born March 20, 1961, in Montgomery County, Tenn., the daughter of the late Virginia and George Morgan Spangenberger.
She was a housewife.
Mrs. Williams is survived by her husband, Charles A. Williams; two sons, Samuel Bane Mosley of Jacksonville, Tenn., and Jesse Williams of Flemingsburg; two daughters, Danielle Thoroughman of Flemingsburg, and Veronique Williams of Clarksville, Tenn.; two brothers, Kenny (Donna) Spangenberger of Elizabethtown, and Claude Spangenberger of Clarksville; three sisters, Frances Clark of Montgomery County, Tenn., Wilma Long of Bowling Green and Pam Rye of Palmyra, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Josh Abreu, Justin Abreu, Nevaeh Thoroughman, Harlen Mosley and Ianna Mosley.
Services are 1 p.m., Saturday at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home with Bro. Randy Taylor and Sister Jan Way Rudolph officiating.
Visitation is 11 a.m., until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith

Edward Smith, Jr., age 65, of Hope Hill Road, Flemingsburg, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

He was born April 18, 1943, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and was the son of the late Edward and Juanita Stewart Smith.

Survivors include five sons, Sgt Daniel Smith and wife Stefani of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, GySgt Joseph Smith and wife Melanie of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, SSG Jonathan Smith currently serving in Afghanistan, Jeremy Smith and wife Amber of Morehead, Kentucky, and SSG Timothy Smith and wife Ashley of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; two daughters, Lisa Smith and friend Allison Cohen of Boca Raton, Florida, and Kristi Bailey and husband Darold of Morehead, Kentucky; two brothers, Jim Smith of Morehead, Kentucky, and Gary Gene Smith of Clay City, Kentucky; 15 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Edward served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War in Germany and Puerto Rico. He earned a B.S. Degree from Morehead State University and was a former employee of the Raymond Construction Company of Naples, Florida, accountant, and insurance salesman.

Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Clayton Stacey and Brother Brooks Karrick officiating.

Full military rites will be conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be the five sons and son-in-law.

Visitation is after 3 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Fleming Council for the Arts sets Celebration

The Fleming County Council for the Arts is moving ahead with the Annual Herman Chittison Celebration of the Arts September 12-13, 2009 in Flemingsburg’s City Park.

The Celebration will include a variety of performances ranging from jazz to swing to folk, a fine arts fair, food vendors and more.

A fund raiser dinner and performance will be staged in mid-June.

Membership in the Council is $25 for individuals, $1 for students, $50 for businesses, and $100 and up for Patrons. Checks for membership may be mailed to the Fleming County Council for the Arts, PO Box 26, Flemingsburg, KY 41041.

The next meeting, open to anyone, will be Thursday, Feb. 12, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fleming County Public Library.

Fire kills one (Updated)

One person died in a fire on Fox Springs Avenue early Wednesday morning, according to officials.

Deputy Coroner Gary Workman confirmed the death of  47 year old Brenda Williams of 605 Fox Spring Avenue. Three family members were taken to the hospital. There is no report as to the cause of the fire and Flemingsburg Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jerry McCloud will meet with the state fire marshal to examine the scene later today.

According to Workman, the family of four got out of the house shortly after the fire started.

“She had been out,” Workman said. “Everyone was out of the house and talked to each other. She went back in to get the dog.”

The woman’s husband tried to help her get out of the house the second time, but was forced back by the intensity of the fire, according to Workman. The woman and the dog perished in the fire.

Her husband, their son and their son's girlfriend were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not available.

The fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m.

An autopsy was scheduled Wednesday at the state medical examiner's office in Frankfort, but it appeared that smoke inhalation was the cause of death, Fleming County Deputy Coroner Gary Workman said.

McCloud said investigators had not determined the fire's cause

The family lost everything, he said. They had no insurance on the rented home and none of the family members are employed.

“They have nothing. No jobs, no insurance, nothing,” Workman said.

Fatal fire in Flemingsburg

Flemingsburg Police are confirming that a fire on Fox Spring Avenue took one life and sent three others to the hospital. Names have not been released, and officials are still at the scene.

New snow hits county; about 4 inches

Transportation crews plowing, treating roadways

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky. - Transportation Cabinet crews in northeast Kentucky are plowing snow from roadways this morning after an overnight storm dumped several inches of snow across the region.

Plows and salt truck crews are out in Bath, Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Greenup, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties in Department of Highways District 9, and in neighboring districts.

As of 6 a.m., all roadways were open, but mostly snow covered with lanes and other markings obscured as crews battle blowing and drifting snow.

National Weather Service forecasts call for bitter cold temperatures today, Wednesday, with a chance of more snow. Highway crews will continue to treat roadways as long as necessary. Motorists should consider all roads slick and hazardous. If you travel, please ensure plenty of time to reach your destination, leave a “space cushion” between vehicles, and remain aware that bridges and overpasses often freeze first.
