Victim of accident identified

The Fleming County coroner has released the identity of a 13-year-old girl who was killed Wednesday morning after being hit by a car.

The incident happened at about 6 a.m. on Highway 32 in Elizaville. Police say the victim, Amber Choate, had stayed at her grandmother's house overnight and was walking to her house, located across the street, when she was hit.

Choate was an eighth-grader at Simons Middle School, which held a moment of silence for her.

According to WLEX-TV in Lexington, the Fleming County deputy coroner has confirmed that a 13-year-old girl was killed Wednesday morning after being hit by a vehicle.

The incident happened at about 6 a.m. on Highway 32 in Elizaville. So far, police have not released any other details.

Mr. Stone

Allen Kash Stone, 95, of Carlisle passed away on Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009 at Johnson-Mathers Nursing Home after a long illness.

He was born March 21, 1914, in Carlisle to the late William and Pearl Stone.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Alvin Stone, and three sisters, Lydia Bell McClain, Marion Bellamy, and Ruby Ritchie.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Dovie E. Stone, also of Johnson-Mathers Nursing Home; a son, Allen Clay Stone (Marjorie); a daughter, Mary Ellen Bramel of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a brother, Frank Stone of Carlisle, and by several nieces and nephews.

He was a life-long tobacco and cattle farmer. He was employed by the Dept. of Transportation for many years as driver and equipment operator. He was a Carlisle city policeman. He was a member of the Kentucky National Guard and the Carlisle Methodist Church.

Services are graveside at the Elizaville Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, with Brother Alvin Eckler officiating. Price Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Honorary bearers are Walter Platt, Pat Dunn, Gary Evans, Jay Evans, Billy Evans, Gayle Tincher, and Bobby Kinder.

Mr. Burke

Marvin Jennings Burke, Jr., 86, of 31 Tollgate Drive, Flemingsburg, died Saturday, November 14, after several years of heart problems.

Mr. Burke was born October 30, 1923, in Nicholas County to the late Maymie and Marvin Jennings Burke, and was a dairy salesman for Clover Leaf Dairy for over 30 years and then employed by Federal Mogul and by Grimes Greenhouse. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a cannoneer in the Asiatic Pacific, and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Maysville.

He is survived his wife, Ellen Long Burke; a daughter-in-law, Susan Burke, Maysville; a grandson, Michael David (Melissa) Burke of Union, Ky.; Great-grandchildren Delaney, Katie, and Griffen Burke; a brother, Johnny (Peggy) Burke, Ewing; and by four sisters, Emma Lee Ungeright, Columbus, Ind., Naomi Cropper, Washington, Ky., Betty Beckett, Amelia, Ohio, and Janet (Sam) Fullenkamp, Sardis.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Hiatt Burke; two brothers, Earl and William Burke; and one sister, Pauline Cropper.

Visitation is Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Denton-Workman Funeral Home. Services are Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Denton-Workman, with Bro. Tony Leiss and Bro. Greg Grimes officiating.

Interment with military rites at the graveside will follow in the Elizaville Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; one daughter, Ramona Mitchell; two sons, Jeff (Cara) Doyle and Mark (Marjorie) Doyle, both of Flemingsburg; three sisters, Jewell (Gene) Earlywine, Beulah Armstrong and Delores (James) Dugan, all of Flemingsburg; three brothers, Adrian (Minnie) Doyle and George (Millie) Doyle, both of Flemingsburg, and Dr. Marion Doyle of Nashville; four grandchildren, Hilary Doyle, Haley Doyle, Evan Mitchell and Analiese Mitchell; and step-grandson, Hunter Warner.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Russell, Melvin and Raymond Doyle.

Services will be 1 p.m., Tuesday at the Boone-Nickell Funeral Home with Rev. Norman Wasson officiating.

Burial will follow in Fleming County Cemetery.

Visitation at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home is after 6 p.m., today.

Mr. Doyle

Barbour G. Doyle, 70, of Flemingsburg passed away Saturday at Fleming County Hospital.

Mr. Doyle was the president of By-Pass Mobile Homes, a well-known businessman and developer, and was an avid fisherman. He was a collector of classic cars and a classic car enthusiast.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, a member of VFW Post 1834 and W.N. Fant Post of the American Legion.

Mr. Pettit

Vernon D. Pettit of Johnson School Road in Grange City, Kentucky, passed away at his home on Saturday, November 14, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was born on January 9, 1934, in Fleming County, Kentucky, to the late James Tobe and Amanda Helen Bradshaw Pettit.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ersie Burton Pettit; one son L.D. (Barb) Pettit of Grange City, KY; and two daughters, Bernetta (Larry) Catching, of London, KY and Rhonda (Randy) Hawkins of Grange City, KY; four grandchildren, Brad (Mary Jane) Pettit, Kelly Pettit, Adam (Michele) Hawkins, Amy Hawkins; and one great-granddaughter, Laura Pettit.

He is also survived by one brother, Emerson Pettit, of Jamestown, OH; two sisters, Lovell Caudill of Grange City, KY and Nellie Taylor of Flemingsburg, KY. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Hubert Pettit, Leon Pettit, and Bob Pettit, and one sister, Madge Wakely.

He was a retired Fleming County school bus driver, a lifelong farmer, and a Kentucky Colonel. He was a member of the Johnson First Church of God.

Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday, November 16, 2009, at the Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro The funeral will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 17, 2009, in the chapel of Hutton Funeral Home with Bro. Vernon Gross and Bro. Billie Wagoner officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bill Gross, Bob Flora, Scotty Dailey, Monty Jent, Jamie Hawkins, Bill Adams, Ricky Lewis, Paul Taylor, Rick Maze, Gerald Dyer, Dennie Adams, Glen Burriss, and Danny Jent.

Honorary pallbearers will be Orville Anderson, Emery Caudill, Ford Hinton, Jimmy Gooding and Mike Vise.
