Mr. Helphenstine

Oscar Helphenstine Jr., born April 16, 1930, passed away March 24, 2011, at Fleming County Hospital.

He was a retired carpenter.

Oscar was the son of the late Oscar and Lennie Helphenstine Sr.

He was proceeded in death by son, Keith Helphenstine; and brother, Roy Helphenstine.

He is survived by his children, Danny (Kathy) Helphenstine of Tollesboro, and Connie (Jackie) Williamson of Flemingsburg . He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dana (Roger) Gulley, Michael (Melissa) Williamson and Jeff Williamson of Flemingsburg, and Brian (Teresa) Helphenstine and Chris (Julie) Helphenstine of Tollesboro. He is survived by great-grandchildren, Britani, Michelle, Carley Gulley, Brandon Williamson, Alexis and Tate Williamson, Tierra Tulley and Bryson Helphenstine; two brothers, Ronnie Helphenstine of Tollesboro, and William Helphenstine of Florida; and a sister, Mary Grayson of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted Sunday, March 27, at 2 p.m., at Boone-Nickel Funeral Home. with John Moore officiating.

Visitation will be from noon until time of service, Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbears will be Mike and Jeff Williamson, Chris and Brian Helphenstine, Roger Gulley, Chase Rushing and Koty Riley.  Honoray Pallbears will be Britani and Michelle Gulley.

Mr. Burton

Charles Walter Burton, 75, of Ewing, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at Nicholas County Hospital.

He was born Feb. 19, 1936, in Mason County to the late Edgar and Stella Burton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Velma Tootsie Burton.

He was a chef for S&S Cafeterias and served in the United States Army.

He is survived by four sons, Mike (Bonnie) Burton, Jim (Polly) Burton, Gary Burton and Tony Burton, all of Ewing; two daughters, Marcie Jandro and Julie Burton, both of Ewing; 12 grandchildren, Christie Burton, Cole Burton, Regina Fulton, Tina and Trista Jandro, Tiffany Taylor, Bobby, Jonothan and Casey Burton, Derek McFarland, Megan Burton and Tabitha Abner; and one great-grandchild, Keagan Florence.

He was preceded in death by a son, Robby Burton; and one great-grandchild, Tyler Burton.

Services are 1 p.m,. Friday, March 25, 2011, at Denton-Workman Funeral Home, Flemingsburg.

Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery - Mount Tabor, Ewing.

Visitation is 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Pence

Micheal Everett Pence, age 50, of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at his sister’s home.

Born November 9, 1960, in Morehead, Kentucky, he is the son of Phyllis Messer Pence of Morehead and the late Ollie Hayse Pence. One brother, David Pence, also preceded him in death.

In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by his wife, Erin Ishmeal Pence, and three stepsons, Waylon, Caleb and Bo Crawford of Morehead; a son, Scott McClurg of Olive Hill, Kentucky; a daughter, Tara Brooke of Indiana; two brothers, Mark Pence of Morehead and Rick Pence of Wallingford, Kentucky; one sister, Lisa Pence of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was a former bricklayer and enjoyed being with family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, March 25, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James DeAtley officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mark Pence, Rick Pence, Daniel Boswell, Gary Jones, Jr., Roger Pence, and Gene Netherly.

Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky.

Mr. Lang

Andrew Martin Lang died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Central Baptist Hospital.

He was born in Cynthiana to the late John and Philimenia Lang.

He was a farmer all of his life and was of the Catholic faith. He was a Korean war veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Cecilia Berry.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carolyn Lang; a daughter, Michelle (Greg) Hunt; two grandchildren, Cassandra Hilterbrand and Zachary Hunt; brothers and sisters, Eugene Lang of Aberdeen, Ohio, John W. Lang of Williamstown, Marion Donohue of Lexington, Deloris Donohue of Texas, and Bernie Lang of Arizona

Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, March 24, 2011, at St. Patrick Cemetery in Washington. Military rites by the W.N. Fant American Legion Post No. 5 and Franklin Sousley VFW Post 1834.

Mrs. Sloas

Bessie Deloris Sloas, 82, of Flemingsburg passed away Saturday morning, March 19, 2011, at Fleming County Hospital after a short illness.

She was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Sandy Hook, to the late Green and Nan Howard Stamper.

She was the owner and operator of Sloas Grocery in Goddard for 20 years before retiring in 1982. She attended the Bluebank United Methodist Church and loved playing bingo in Flemingsburg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Berlin Sloas; six brothers; and three sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Luella (Roger) Utterback of Mount Carmel, and Justine (Steve) Allen of Fox Valley; a sisters, Melba Barker of Flemingsburg; four grandchildren, Connie (Reeves) Anderson of Ewing, Shawnda (Thomas) Lasword of Morehead, Earl Reeves of Flemingsburg, and Shane Thomas of Morehead; two step-grandchildren, David (Miranda) Utterback of Mount Carmel, and Chris Allen of Owingsville; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are 1 p.m., Wednesday, March 24, 2011, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is 6-9 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gifford

Evelyn Mae Gifford, 76, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011, at St. Claire Hospital in Morehead.

She was born Dec. 11, 1934, in Augusta, to the late Les and Emma Campbell.

She had retired from U.S. Shoe Corp after 35 years of service, had worked at Pepsi for 10 years and was also a bookkeeper in her home. She was a member of Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Gifford; children, Kimberly (Dwayne Newsom) Alderman of Flemingsburg, and Dallas (Randi) Gifford of Winchester; grandchildren, Aaron Alderman, Dakota Gifford, Coty Meade, Mackenzie Gifford, Cory Nason and Christopher Nason; and her siblings, Danny Campbell of Massachusetts, Hildreth Record of Ohio and Dorothy Browning of Missouri.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home.

Visitation is 6 - 9 p.m., today at the funeral home.

Burial will follow in Fleming County Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson

Harriett Nevada Johnson, 70, of Paris, formerly of Fleming County, died Monday, March 14, 2011 at Central Baptist Hospital.

She was born June 4, 1940, in Pike County, to the late Dennis and Lillian Johnson.

She formerly worked in Ohio as a registered nurse.

Harriett was a loving wife and mother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Johnson; and her parents.

She is survived by her children, Floyd (Bonnie Jo) Johnson of Seattle, Wash., Lillian Cornett of Paris, Timothy Johnson of Okeanna, Ohio, Gayle Johnson of Paris, Tommy (Shelia) Johnson of Olympia, and Linda (Tom) Barber of Lexington; grandchildren, Tabitha, Gillian, Kyle, Dennis, Jonathan, Rachael, Samantha, William, Jessica, Cherish, Chantell, Mary Beth and Lauren Nevada; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Paul (Carol) Johnson.

Services will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 17, 2011, at Boone-Nickell Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery.

Visitation is 11 a.m.- 2 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
