Demolition of the old Fleming County Hospital began Monday, Aug. 25, with equipment and water hoses hard at work.

Parade into Goddard

The stars and stripes were joined by the Civil War company and antique tractors for a parade across the Goddard Bridge to open the 11th annual Fleming County Covered Bridge Festival on Saturday, Aug. 23. An estimated 5,000 people attended and spent time with 65 vendors, an all-day schedule of musicians, and lots of Fleming County residents enjoying the return of the event to its original location.

Lions give $5000 to Hospital Fund

 

The Flemingsburg Lion's Club presented Joyce Fidler with a $5000 check for the Fleming County Hospital building fund during their Aug. 21 meeting.

Pollard found guilty

A Fleming County jury returned a guilty verdict in a wanton endangerment case against a man also charged with murder.

Roy I. Pollard Jr. was found guilty of wanton endangerment, terroristic threatening and violating an EPO. The charges stem from an encounter with Eric Thompson, the brother of Jason Thompson, who was shot to death in January. Pollard has been charged with that murder and that of Willa Thompson, who was killed the same night.

According to Eric Thompson, Pollard came to the Thompson residence in December and pulled a gun on Thompson.

Pollard was sentenced to five years for terroristic threatening, 12 months for wanton endangerment, 12 months for violation of a Kentucky EPO, to run concurrent. Each count also carries a $500 fine.

Tony Roth is interim Asst. Superintendent

According to the Maysville Ledger-Independent, an interim assistant superintendent has been named for Fleming County schools.
Tony Roth was appointed to the interim assistant superintendent position and assumed the duties on Aug. 1. Roth is a former teacher and a former principal at Ewing Elementary School.
"Mr. Roth brings a wealth of knowledge about students in Fleming County and we are excited he has taken on this interim role," Superintendent Kelley Crain said Friday.
Roth, who also currently oversees the facilities for the school district, said he is excited to hold the position if only as the interim.
"This is a challenge I accept so that I may continue to serve the staff and students of Fleming County schools. I intend to do the best job I can." Roth said. "I have aspirations of being a superintendent someday and this is a great opportunity for me."
Crain said a final decision for filling the position will be made once a tribunal hears the appeal of former assistant superintendent Jeff Burke, who was dismissed by Crain for reasons which have not been disclosed.

No charge to students for bus rides

Contrary to a headline in today's Ledger-Independent, Fleming County students do not have to pay $1.50 per mile to ride the school buses.

The charge is for special events and is largely offset by allocations to each teacher for such travel. It does not in any way affect normal bus travel, according to superintendent Kelley Crain.

Gazette presents check to hospital fund

Flemingsburg Gazette ad manager Kelli Jo Hickerson presents a $500 check on behalf of the Gazette, Hickerson, and Garry and Danetta Barker to Ron Harrington, CFO of Fleming County Hospital.
