Most Fleming County schools meet CATS goals

Four of the six Fleming County schools met or exceeded their goals on the 2008 Commonwealth Accountability Testing System scores. Meeting set for Chittison honor

Anyone interested in being involved at the Herman Chittison Memorial Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 11, as part of Founders Day, please come to the meeting at the Chamber office at 4 pm, Tuesday, Sept. 16. We will be finalizing the plans and details of the memorial ceremony. There will be a live professional jazz band playing during the ceremony. If anyone is interested in donating toward this ceremony, all contributions are welcome. Sapp marker to be dedicated

The Kentucky Historical Society will dedicate a new historical marker for Private Ambers Sapp, the most highly decorated Fleming County veteran from the World War I era, on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 2:30 p.m. near the Elizaville Cemetery.

Historical marker #2257 reads: PRIVATE AMBERS SAPP Displayed great coolness and courage under heavy enemy barrage when he went forward without hesitation to destroy enemy wire entanglements & continued this extremely hazardous work until killed on Aug. 17, ,1918 near Frapelle, France. Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for “extraordinary heroism in action.” Buried in Elizaville Cem.

Presented by the Fleming County Museum Society.

Joe Kenney will provide the invocation, Becky Vittetow of the Kentucky Highway Marker Program will being a welcome, and Stanley Benton will introduce the dignitaries present.

Gerald Griffith will make remarks, and Stanley Benton will deliver the dedication address.

After music from the Fleming County Middle School ensemble, an Honor Guard will present a Salute to the Fallen.

The marker will then be unveiled by Harvey Planck and Ralph Sapp, family members of Ambers Sapp.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Fleming County man killed in Montgomery crash

According to a report in the Lexington Herald-Leader, a 22-year-old Flemingsburg man died in a Montgomery County accident early Sunday morning. Tony E. Wilkinson II was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred on U.S. 60 West of Mount Sterling about 12:12 a.m. Wilkinson was driving west in a 2004 Chevy Impala and was attempting to pass a motorcycle in the same lane. Wilkinson then was traveling into oncoming traffic in the eastbound lane and left the roadway to avoid a head-on collision. Wilkinson struck several trees on the eastbound side and the motorcycle driver continued on, state police said. Wilkinson was not wearing a seat belt. The investigation is ongoing.

Fox wants to be restored to higher education post

 

According to an Associated Press report in the Lexington Herald-Leader, one of the most recognizable names in Kentucky education circles is asking a judge to restore her to a position on the Council on Postsecondary Education.

Fleming County native Virginia Fox is the former chief executive of Kentucky Educational Television and a former state education secretary. She filed suit in Franklin County on Friday asking for an order declaring that she still is a member of the council.

Gov. Steve Beshear had replaced Fox on the council with former Lexington Mayor Pam Miller.

Beshear spokesman Jay Blanton said the governor appointed Miller only after lawmakers failed to confirm Fox's appointment. Blanton said Beshear acted properly.
