Mr. Steward

Edward Samuel (Buddy) Steward, 71, of Ewing was born on July 29, 1937, in Fleming County to the late John Dee and Mabel Queen Steward. He was called home on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Fleming County Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Eula Jones Steward; a son, Jeffrey Dale Steward; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Steward Jackson.
Edward leaves to cherish his memory seven children, John Edward (Maggie) Steward of Flemingsburg, Rita Steward (Anthony Connors) of Ewing, Troy Steward (Krista Lofton) of Ewing, Jennifer Steward of Ewing, Jeanette (Arthur) Jones of Carlisle, Stacy Steward of Flemingsburg, and Rodney Steward (Mickie Taylor) of Ewing; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Moore Steward, of Tacoma, Wash.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Edward was a retired employee of Randall Textron in Flemingsburg. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Nepton, where he previously served as Sunday school superintendent and trustee.
Services 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Nepton. Burial in Fleming County Cemetery.
Visitation 11 a.m. until time of service, Tuesday.

Brian Kelly is new FCHS coach

Brian Kelly is the new Fleming County High School basketball coach.

The son of former Panthers coach Lake Kelly, Brian's hiring will be announced at a 2 pm press conference at the high school. Previously he  coached at Centennial High School in Nashville, Tenn., where his son was Player of the Year in 2008-09 and has signed to play college basketball at Miami University of Ohio.

Mr. Hunt

Ricky “Rick” W. Hunt, 56, of Washington Court House, Ohio passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Kettering Medical Center after a long and hard fought battle with Lukemia.

Rick was born in Maysville on April 12, 1953. He joined the US Air Force in 1970. He drove a semi-truck for 32 years, during which he drove for many companies but found his “home” at Jamestown Transportation where made many life-long friends and was known to everyone as “Rick-a-Sha.” He loved being outdoors and working in the yard, driving across the country and watching NASCAR.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Charles Hunt: his brother Frank Hunt; special parents Clell and Faye Donaldson; special niece Noreen Donaldson and granddaughter Ella Puckett.

Rick is survived by his wife of 28 years, Vicki (Payton) Hunt, whom he married on Oct. 4, 1981. He is also survived by his children, Ricky Shane Hunt of Waashington Counrthouse, Shannon Hunt of Washington Court House, Shawn Terra (Nathan) Puckett of Washington Court House; Stacie (Paul) Moore, Oak Hill; Troy (Staci) Payton, Washington Court House; and Nichole (Robert) Herron, Youngstown; by grandchildren Preston Taylor, Emily Brewer, Ceiarra Puckett, Natalee Payton, Trenton Palmer, Shane “Austin” Hunt, Devon Hunt, and Gavin Puckett; by brothers and sisters Phyllis (Roger) Binegar, Jeffersonville; Pat (Don) Morris, Washington Court House; Ronnie Hunt, Washington Court House; Charles (Mildred) Hunt, Washington Court House; and special brother Calvin (Lida) Donaldson of Flemingsburg. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Jennifer (Kyle) Hurles and Brad (Heidi) Binegar and by special friends Kevin Adkins, Gregg Hyatt, and Bobbie Gordon.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Morrow’s Funeral Home, 415 East Court Street, Washington Court House, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Washington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, April 24, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Student Art Show is April 27

Over 300 pieces of student art will be on display on Monday, April 27, at the Flemingsburg Elementary School. Included are grades K-6. The display opens at 6:30 pm in the school cafeteria.

Mrs. Bailey

Maggie Carpenter Bailey, 95, formerly of Old Sardis Pike passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Robertson County Health Care Facility.

        Mrs. Bailey was born in Robertson County on December 4, 1913 daughter of the late James Nelson & Rose Catherine Dickson Carpenter.  She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church where she was active in United Methodist Women and  had served as assistant superintendent of Sunday School.  She was awarded a lifetime membership of the Farmerettes Homemakers several years ago.  She was a volunteer for Tri-County We Care Mission in Mt. Olivet.

        Survivors include a granddaughter, Christine Bailey and a daughter-in-law Patricia Bailey of Maysville.  One sister Pearl Day of Maysville and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her husband Omar T. Bailey on December 5, 1969 and a son Nelson Bailey on December 11, 1996.  Also  seven brothers and four sisters.

        Services will be conducted at 1 P.M. Friday  at Palmer Funeral Home in May’s Lick with Dr. Michael Rice officiating.  Interment will follow in the Shannon Cemetery.  Visitation Noon till 1 P.M. Puckett found guilty

 

A Fleming County jury found Gerald Puckett guilty on two counts of diverting charitable gaming funds in excess of $300.
Puckett, who had been released on his own recognizance pending trial, was taken into custody following the jury's sentencing recommendation of four years in prison on each count, to run consecutively for a total of eight years behind bars. 
Asst. Commonwealth's Attorney Adkins said the court has the option to order restitution payments at Puckett's official sentencing hearing tentatively scheduled for May 15.

Mrs. Johnson

Pauline Catron Johnson, 72, of Old Flemingsburg Road, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at her residence.

She was born on October 26, 1936 in Carter County, Kentucky, a daughter of the late John and Kate Nickels Catron.

Mrs. Johnson was a retired supervisor for Cowden’s Manufacturing having worked there for 25 years and she was also a former caregiver.  She was of the Methodist Faith and enjoyed sewing and quilting.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Johnson, who passed away on September 4, 2003, one son, Rocky Wayne Johnson, who passed away on June 25, 2002, three brothers, Franklin “Jack” Catron, Herbert Owen Catron and Herman Catron and two sisters, Jessie Oxendine and Olive Lee Pierce.

Survivors include two sons, Rickey Johnson of Hillsboro and Stearl Johnson of Morehead, two daughters, Debbie Goodan of Morehead and Mary Davis of Charlestown, Indiana, four sisters, Jewell Seagraves and Christine Johnson both of Morehead, Maxine Stephens of Lebanon, Ohio, and Martha Silcox of Ypsilanti, Michigan, eight grandchildren, Donnie Goodan, Shane Johnson, Toby Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Autumn Johnson, Michael Kessler, Adam Kessler and Jessica Kessler, three great-grandchildren, Jessie Goodan, Hannah Goodan and Haley Goodan and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 18, 2009 in the chapel of the Lane-Stucky-Gray Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating.   Burial was in the Catron Cemetery in Elliott County. 

Pallbearers were Donnie Goodan, Jessie Goodan, Shane Johnson, Bradley Johnson, Michael Kessler and Adam Kessler.
