Mrs. Cooper

Olive Walton Cooper, 97, of the Morehead Road died Wednesday, April 29, 2009, in Flemingsburg.
She was born, July 6, 1911, in Fleming County to the late Rawleigh Walton and Lucy Rucker Walton.
Mrs. Cooper was a housewife and farmed. She was a member of the Bluebank Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Cooper.
She is survived by two sons, William R. (Sandra) Cooper and Charles S. (Bertie) Cooper, all of Fleming County; one daughter, Alice K. (Larry) Hinton of Fleming County; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A brother, William Garr Walton; and sister, Georgia Young, preceded her in death.
Services are 1 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg. Dr. David Barnett will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Fleming County Cemetery.
Visitation will be today, May 1, 2009, at 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ms. James

Tina Louise James, 40, of Flemingsburg died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 20, 1969, in Fleming County to Wanda Hester James of Fleming County and the late Gerald L. James.
She is survived by two brothers, Gerald D. James of Nashville, Tenn. and Tim (Robin) James of Flemingsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Services are 1 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2009, at the Wallingford United Methodist Church. The body will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service. Rev. Bob Ray will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Wallingford Cemetery.
Visitation is 6-9 p.m., today, at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg.

Mr. Lykins

Graveside services for John E. "Toby" Lykins, 74, a retired 20-year veteran of the United States Air force will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Wedonia Cemetery. Arrangements by Boone-Nickell Funeral Home.

Ms. Saunders

Juanita Saunders, age 93, of Pioneer Trace Nursing Home, Flemingsburg, died on Monday, April 27, 2009, at the Fleming County Hospital.
Ms. Saunders was born on Nov. 28, 1915, in Fleming County, the daughter of Alvin T. Saunders and Lillie Nealis Saunders.
She is survived by a sister, Olive Waterman of Norman, Okla.; nephews, James Saunders, Donald Saunders and Gerald Saunders; and her longtime caregiver, Mabel Hamilton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, James Saunders and Alvin W. Saunders; sisters, Mildred Teater and Eldiva Wood; and nephew, Paul Saunders.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 20, 2009, at the Hillsboro Cemetery with the Rev. Marvin W. Suit officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hutton Funeral Home, Hillsboro, Ky.

Sirk out as Hospital CEO

The Fleming County Hospital Board recently voted to ask QHR Management Services to make a change in the CEO position, replacing current CEO David Sirk.

According to information from a board member, effective April 28 the Regional Vice President for QHR, Kean Spellman asked that Ron Harrington serve as on-site representative while a search for a new CEO is conducted.  In approximately two weeks, QHR will place an interim CEO at the hospital to provide additional continuity. 

Mr. Bernard

Darrell Ray Bernard, 61, of Marion went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Elizabethtown, he was born on Nov. 30, 1947, to the late Delmar G. Bernard and Libby Bernard Todd.
He was a member of New Horizon Baptist Fellowship, he loved the Lord, his family, his church and loved to sing and praise the Lord. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy. Three wives, Joanne, Beulah and Mary, and a sister, Sharon Barker preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Becky Bernard of Marion; his step-mother, Peggy Bernard of Hopkinsville; five children, Tammy Jean Lewis of Wheelersburg, Ohio, Darrell Ray Bernard II of Cincinnati, Darrin Douglas Bernard of West Union, Ohio, Alicia Marie Bernard and Anthony Dion Bernard, both of Marion; three step-children, Craig, Candi and Heather Murdock; four brothers, Terry Bernard and John Todd, both of Flemingsburg and Ronald and Phillip Bernard, both of Michigan; 13 grandchildren; five great -grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services were held on Monday, April 27, 2009, at 2 p.m. in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Phil Murdock officiating. The family received friends prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial was in the McDowell Memorial Park with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy. Memorials may be made to New Horizon Baptist Fellowship at P.O. Box 99, Marion, N.C. 28752. Mr. Steward

Edward Samuel (Buddy) Steward, 71, of Ewing was born on July 29, 1937, in Fleming County to the late John Dee and Mabel Queen Steward. He was called home on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Fleming County Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Eula Jones Steward; a son, Jeffrey Dale Steward; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Steward Jackson.
Edward leaves to cherish his memory seven children, John Edward (Maggie) Steward of Flemingsburg, Rita Steward (Anthony Connors) of Ewing, Troy Steward (Krista Lofton) of Ewing, Jennifer Steward of Ewing, Jeanette (Arthur) Jones of Carlisle, Stacy Steward of Flemingsburg, and Rodney Steward (Mickie Taylor) of Ewing; a daughter-in-law, Audrey Moore Steward, of Tacoma, Wash.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Edward was a retired employee of Randall Textron in Flemingsburg. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Nepton, where he previously served as Sunday school superintendent and trustee.
Services 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Nepton. Burial in Fleming County Cemetery.
Visitation 11 a.m. until time of service, Tuesday.
