Kathleen Allen Zachary, 97, died June 11, 2009, at her home.
She was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Jane "Nannie" Hoskins Allen.
She spent her childhood days on a farm on Green River in Casey County. She married her high school sweetheart, John, in 1931. She began her teaching career in Casey County, alternating semesters to attend and graduate from Eastern State Teachers College, now known as Eastern Kentucky University. After moving to Fleming County she continued to teach first grade and retired after 30 years.
She was a longtime faithful member of the Flemingsburg United Methodist Church where she served on many committees and wrote a publication on the history of the church. She was a member of the homemakers, Delta Kappa Gamma, a Kentucky Colonel and DAR. She was devoted to her church, family, community and many friends. Her strong spirit brought love and joy to her entire family.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Whitman of Lexington; brother, Carl (Ila) Allen of Milton; a daughter-in-law, Louise Zachary of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Jeff (Ellen) Darnall, Richard Darnall, Derek and Kevin Zachary; four great-grandchldren, Sarah, Christopher and Alexis Darnall and Nathan Zachary; two sisters-in-law, Ethelene Zachary and Velma Sanders: and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Percy and David Zachary; and a brother, Forest Allen.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.
Burial will follow Monday afternoon in the Glenwood Cemetery in Liberty.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Boone-Nickell Funeral Home, Flemingsburg.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.
