Miss Rankin

Miss Ruth Lathram Rankin, 74, a prominent Fleming Countian, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, June 19, 2009.
She was born April 21, 1935, a daughter of the late Charles E. Rankin and Dorothy Lathram Rankin. A sister, Ann Rankin Cannon also preceded her in death.

She graduated from Fleming County High School and from Asbury College in Wilmore. She received her master's degrees from both the University of Kentucky and Duke University.
An English teacher for 30 years, Ruth taught at both the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University's Laboratory Schools and finished her career in the Fleming County school system. She was well known by her former students for never forgetting a name and always took pride in their achievements.
A person of strong faith, Ruth was a member of the Flemingsburg First United Methodist Church and served on several church boards as long as her health permitted. She was always one of the first parishioners to welcome and new pastor and their family into the local church family.
Ruth had a multitude of interests that ranged from knitting and cross stitch, decorating, gourmet cooking, reading, travel and was well known as a devoted University of Kentucky sports fan, who attended games whenever possible. One of her fondest memories was when she and her father listened to the Cincinnati Reds baseball games on their transistor radio. She later attended many major league baseball games and was especially interested in following the career of Fleming County's own Woodie Fryman.
As someone who took great pride in her community, Ruth served on the Fleming County Library Boards, the historical society and served as chairperson of the Fleming County Hospital Board. She was recently bestowed the prestigious title of Chairperson Emeritus. A visionary, she played an instrumental role in planning and decorating the modern, state of the art structure that is today's Fleming County Hospital. One of the proudest moments of her life was the hospital's dedication ceremony in July 2008.
She is survived by cousins, Mrs. Winifred Burden of Fleming County, Miss Roberta Lathram of Fairfield, Ohio, Mrs. Marjorie Winfough and family of Liberty Township, Ohio; loving companions, Sandy Collier and Hazel Kerns; and a host of close friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home.
Visitation 5 - 8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
Donations may be made to Flemingsburg First United Methodist Church or the Fleming County Hospital.

Mr. Weaver

Earl F. Weaver, age 79, of North Bell Street, Bradner, Ohio, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky.

He was born October 5, 1929, in Portsmouth, Ohio, and was the son of the late Earl and Rebecca Frances Skaggs Weaver. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, David Eugene Weaver and Estill Carl Weaver; two daughters, Clercie F. Weaver and Clara F. Weaver; and one son, Robert L. Settle.

His wife, Martha Lorene Epperhart Weaver, whom he married December 1, 1949, passed away August 3, 2003.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia L. Huston of Bradner, Ohio; one grandson, John T. Huston and his wife Amber R.; and three great grandchildren, Cooper T. Huston, McKinly B. Huston, and Bayleigh L. Huston.

Also surviving are six brothers, Ronald Weaver of Bradner, Ohio, Arnold Weaver, Robert Weaver, William Weaver, Edsell Weaver and Ernie Weaver, all of Weaver Hollow in Fleming County, Kentucky; and one sister, Virginia Mann of Flemingsburg, Kentucky.

Earl was the owner of the Earl F. Weaver Lumber Company in Wayne, Ohio. He enjoyed hunting, reading, playing dominoes and Rook, but most of all, he enjoyed being with his family.

Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, June 22, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Beulah Weaver officiating. Burial will follow in the Jackson Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, June 21, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky.

Farmer's Market opens June 30

The ground is plowed, plants are growing in the ground and the Fleming County Farmer’s Market is gearing up for another successful year.   The members of this Farmer’s Market have been preparing for this new season by attending learning sessions and ordering the best seeds and plants they can to serve all who want to buy the best quality locally grown produce.

The Farmer’s Market plans to be open on a regular basis beginning on Tuesday, June 30^th, depending on produce availability. So listen to the local radio station and watch the local newspapers to get an update on sales.  

The Fleming County Farmer’s Market is a member of the Kentucky Proud program.   So please support your local market.   Sales will be held on Tuesdays from 2 till 6 pm and on Saturdays 8am till 3pm on the parking lot of the Fleming County Extension Office located on Elizaville Rd.

Mr. Sapp

Everett E. Sapp, 87, of Flemingsburg went to be with the Lord Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Fleming Co. Hospital in Flemingsburg.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Stella Gardner Sapp. He was born in Fleming Co. on November 17, 1921 to the late Ernest and Lizzie Sapp.

Everett was a lifetime member and elder of the Battle Run Christian Church, and a former farmer and landowner until his retirement. Everett served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

He is survived by three daughters: Janice (Charles) Crump, Judy (David) Wright, and Nancy (David) Doyle; two sons: Billy (Mona) Sapp, and Michael (Charlotte) Sapp; seven grandchildren: Mark Ramey, Denise Collinsworth, Candace Conn, Heather Plummer, Isaac Sapp, Tyler Doyle, and Crystal Kennon; and four great grandchildren: Carson and Parker Collinsworth, Seth Ramey, and Hailey Conn.

Everett was preceded in death by two children: a daughter Mary Belle, and a son, Ricky Wayne Sapp; two sisters: Lottie Jones and Ruby Lee Jackson; and a grandson Brad Kennon.

Visitation will be held at Denton-Workman Funeral Home in Flemingsburg on Tuesday, June 16 after 5:00 pm and funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, June 17 with military rights by American Legion and VFW Post 1834. Minister Michael Burnett will be officiating services with interment in Elizaville Cemetery.

Mr. McIntyre

After a brief illness, Houston McIntyre passed away from this life and went to be with his Lord. Houston served in the U.S. Army, 109 Field Artillery Group. He was part of the D-Day Liberation of Europe, landing at Normandy Beach on June 6 1944. He served in the European Theater until his Honorable Discharge in 1945. After the War, he worked at General Electric in Evendale, Ohio; IBM in Lexington (1957- 82); and Fayette County Schools as a bus driver (1982-89). He retired from both IBM and Fayette County Schools. He and his wife Mildred were Charter Members of the Eastland Church of God (1948). For more than 50 years, he served his church as an Usher and by mowing the lawn. Houston was a charter member of the Committee of 101 as well as the organizations oldest and long-serving (43 years) member. The Committee of 101 is an organization that supports athletic programs at the University of Kentucky. Houston was born in Fleming County, one of 10 children (Ribelin, Goldie, William (Dockie), Sally, Frank, Albert, Ida Mae, Stanley, and Virgil) of William and Annie McIntyre. All of them preceded him in death. He is survived by the love of his life, Mildred, his wife, his best friend and his loving partner of sixty seven years. He is also survived by three children and their spouses, Leda and Mel Hall, South Bend, Indiana; Susan and Edd Windsor, Lexington; Marty McIntyre, also from Lexington. Houston was the proud Pappa to Jonathan Frost, Nathan Hall, Christopher McIntyre, Matthew Hall, Mychal Frost and Courtenay McIntyre. He is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 East Main Street, Lexington, KY from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday. A Celebration of Houston’s life will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Eastland Church of God on Liberty Road. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens.

Mr. Alderman

Gabriel Isham (Gabe) Alderman, age 85, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, KY, World War II veteran and local business owner, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY, after a brief illness.

Born November 19, 1923, in Smile, KY, he was the son of the late Posey Lee and Ofphia D. Quesinberry Alderman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Alderman, David Alderman and Posie Alderman, and one sister, Lena Rivers Kinney.

Gabe is survived by his wife of 60 years, Willa Scott (Billie) McClain Alderman; his son, Darrell Alderman and JoAnn; and his daughter, Brenda Oldfield and Joey, all of Morehead, KY.

He has five grandchildren: Chase Alderman and Gabe Oldfield, both of Morehead, KY, Dara Alderman and M’Shae Alderman, both of Washington DC, and Tim Alderman of Dana, KY, and three great grandchildren: Brennan Alderman, of Dana, KY, and Henry Cloern and Cooper Cloern, both of Washington, DC. Also surviving is his long-time secretary and good friend, Joan Owens of Morehead, KY.

Mr. Alderman was the President of Morehead-based underground utilities company, G. & W. Construction, Inc. He served as President of the company for 17 years. While under Mr. Alderman’s direction, G. & W. Construction, Inc., completed more than 100 water and sewer line installation projects throughout Kentucky and Ohio.

Prior to joining G. & W. Construction, Mr. Alderman co-owned G. R. Alderman Co. with his brother, the late Robert Alderman. G. R. Alderman Co. installed the first water lines for Rowan Water, Inc., in Morehead and built numerous banks, courthouses, hospitals and schools throughout KY. Among G.R. Alderman’s local projects were the Rowan County High School (now Rowan County Middle School), Clearfield Elementary School, Peoples Bank of Morehead, University Cinema, Daniel Boone Convalescent Center (presently Life Care Center) and Morehead Methodist Church Annex.

Other construction included the Mt. Sterling Courthouse, Montgomery County High School, Monticello Elementary School, General Telephone New Dial Exchange at Meade, Hayswood Hospital Annex in Maysville, Arjay Elementary School in Pineville, Magoffin County Elementary School, Salyersville High School, Providence Elementary School in Winchester, Pulaski County High School, Georgetown High School, Newtown Elementary School in Georgetown, Jackson County Health Center, Frenchburg Health Center, Carter Caves Vacation Cottages, and Theatre, Office Building in Jenkins.

Mr. Alderman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1943. During World War II, he fought battles in Peleliu and Okinawa, and participated in the occupation of China. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. Don Mantooth officiating. Burial was in Brown Cemetery with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126.

Pallbearers were Gary Pope, Ronnie Lewis, Nicky Pennington, Tom Taylor, Bobby Skaggs, Joe Kinder, and Denver Kinder. Bobby Alderman and Clyde Logan were honorary pallbearers.

Visitation was Saturday, June 13, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.

Mrs. Zachary

Kathleen Allen Zachary, 97, died June 11, 2009, at her home.
She was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Jane "Nannie" Hoskins Allen.
She spent her childhood days on a farm on Green River in Casey County. She married her high school sweetheart, John, in 1931. She began her teaching career in Casey County, alternating semesters to attend and graduate from Eastern State Teachers College, now known as Eastern Kentucky University. After moving to Fleming County she continued to teach first grade and retired after 30 years.
She was a longtime faithful member of the Flemingsburg United Methodist Church where she served on many committees and wrote a publication on the history of the church. She was a member of the homemakers, Delta Kappa Gamma, a Kentucky Colonel and DAR. She was devoted to her church, family, community and many friends. Her strong spirit brought love and joy to her entire family.
She is survived by her daughter, Joan Whitman of Lexington; brother, Carl (Ila) Allen of Milton; a daughter-in-law, Louise Zachary of Carlisle; four grandchildren, Jeff (Ellen) Darnall, Richard Darnall, Derek and Kevin Zachary; four great-grandchldren, Sarah, Christopher and Alexis Darnall and Nathan Zachary; two sisters-in-law, Ethelene Zachary and Velma Sanders: and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two sons, Percy and David Zachary; and a brother, Forest Allen.
A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m., Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.
Burial will follow Monday afternoon in the Glenwood Cemetery in Liberty.
Visitation is 6-8 p.m., Sunday at the Boone-Nickell Funeral Home, Flemingsburg.
