Lewis, Price resign from School Board

The Maysville Ledger-Independent reported today that two members of the Fleming County Board of Education have submitted their resignations.
Blake Price turned in his resignation to the board during its June 30 meeting. Wayne Lewis tendered his resignation to Fleming County Superintendent Kelley Crain in a private meeting in her office.
"The school board is a corporation where majority rules." Lewis said. "While I wasn't happy with all of the decisions made by the board while I was on it, I wouldn't say that led to my decision. I have multiple reasons which I would rather not discuss."
According to Crain, the resignations are final but still have to be approved by the board.
"I really appreciate the leadership Mr. Lewis and Mr. Price showed during their tenure on the school board." Crain said. "They displayed the type of dedication to the school system and to the students that we want from every member."

According to Lisa Gross with the Kentucky Department of Education, "Depending on the timing, it is completely possible that these positions could be filled by the November election rather than appointment by the Commissioner (of Education Jon Draud). However, it is just too soon to say whether or not they will be filled by election or appointment in this situation."
"If it is determined that the positions will be filled by the commissioner," Gross said. "An advertisement will be run in the local newspapers indicating when, where and how to pick up applications to submit for the open positions as well as the deadline the applications need to be received by."
Gross followed up by saying the normal office filing guidelines will be followed if it is determined the openings will be filled in the November election.
According to the Fleming County Clerk's office, the deadline to file for running for the school board "for either the current vacant seats or to run against someone still on the board" is Aug.12 at 4 p.m. Questions on the process for filing should be directed to the Fleming County Clerk's Office.

A special meeting of the school board has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, at noon in the boardroom at the Central Office on Water Street. Topics to be discussed include the resignations and a first reading of new policies to be implemented during the 2008-2009 school year.
