In what could have been the shortest meeting on record the Fleming County Board of Education announced the end to what could have been the longest search for a superintendent.

Board Chair Ed Ward announced Tuesday evening in a called meeting that Tony Roth has accepted the position of Fleming County Schools Superintendent.

“Mr. Roth has served as the Interim Superintendent for the past six months and has done an excellent job; we are confident these efforts will continue” said board chairman Ed Ward.

Roth was originally hired 12 years ago to serve as the Head Football Coach and Drivers Education Instructor, and after a year became the principal at Ewing Elementary School. After two years in that position, Roth moved to the Central Office as Maintenance Director and Safe Schools Coordinator. He held that position until 2008, when he became the Assistant Superintendent/Director of Facilities.

“I look forward to continuing the mission of the Fleming County School District that was established by previous superintendents, and I look forward to working with the board, staff, parents, and students as we join together to help Fleming County Schools become the best that it can be for our students.” Roth said.

Board members John Hyatt, Roy Gray and ward voted yes to the nomination from Hyatt to hire Roth. Jamie Collinsworth and Mike Ishmael voted no.

Roth and his wife, Jackie, are the parents of five children; Michelle/husband Michael, who are both UK graduates, Brian/wife Amy, who are both Murray State graduates, Zach and Nick who are seniors at Centre College, and Natalee, who is a junior at Murray State. Tony and Jackie are the proud grandparents of one child Anna. Brian, Zach, Nick and Natalee are all graduates of the Fleming County School District, and Roth credits many outstanding teachers, coaches, and other role models for the successes his children have had at the collegiate level.

Roth is a native of the Hawkeye state, having been born in Bellevue, Iowa. He comes from a large family, with seven brothers and one sister. He credits his parents, Russell and Corinne, with instilling discipline and a strong work ethic in their children at an early age, and stressing the value of an education. Roth’s father dropped out of school in the sixth grade to work to help support the family, and a highlight of his life was when he received his GED the same year one of his children graduated from high school in the 1970’s.
