Tires burn in county

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader, Authorities in Fleming County were investigating a large fire in a tire dump that was still smoldering Tuesday morning.

The fire, which began about 8:30 p.m. Monday, burned between 1,500 and 2,000 tires in a dump on Tom Ishmael Road, said Dwayne Price, Fleming County's emergency management director.

No evacuations of nearby homes were needed and it did not appear the groundwater would be polluted by runoff, he said.

Kentucky State Police and state fire marshals are investigating, he said.

Earlier on Monday, state environmental officials were investigating the dump because of too many tires, Price said.
