Roy R. “Russie” Saunders, age 67, of State Route 1, Greenup, Kentucky, formerly of Hillsboro, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky.
He was born November 17, 1941, in Hillsboro, Kentucky and was the son of the late Roy “Chick” and Beulah Hawkins Saunders. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Zelma Ramey, and a brother, Kenneth W. “Buster” Hawkins.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Roesch Saunders; one sister, Sue Lewis of Kernersville, North Carolina; four nephews, Chuck Ramey, Shane Ramey, Kevin Lewis, and Josh Lewis, and a niece, Donna Lewis Evans.
Russie was a former sheriff of Fleming County and former owner of Saunders Grocery in Hillsboro.
Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the Hutton Funeral Home with Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery.
Pallbearers: Tim Vice, Clarence Galliger, Mike Egan, Mike Hawkins, Mark Ramey, Marvin Horsley, Gerald Saunders, Curtis Hawkins, Bob McIntyre, Bob Jones.
Visitation is after 5 p.m. Friday at the Hutton Funeral Home, Hillsboro, Kentucky.
