Voiers Runs for City Council

On November 4, citizens all over the United States will be going to polling places to cast their ballots in one of the most important elections in many years. It is both a right and a responsibility for each of us to participate in this process. Choosing our leaders, whether on the national, state, or local level demands careful, serious consideration. We should make every effort to be informed about the candidates and then vote for those we believe are best qualified to provide the leadership that we deserve. As a candidate for the City Council of Flemingsburg, I am committed to addressing quality of life issues in our community which include economic, environmental, health, and recreation concerns. If elected I will endeavor to work with each of you to solve our community’s problems and ensure the brightest possible future for us all. Drug bust nets marijuana

According to the Maysville Ledger Independent, the Fleming County Sheriff's Office, Flemingsburg Police Department, Mason County Sheriff's Office and agents with the Buffalo Trace/Gateway Area Narcotics Task Force arrested 60-year-old Robert Filvey at his home on U.S. 68 in Fairview after an investigation conducted over more than two months for allegedly cultivating and trafficking in marijuana.
According to Fleming County Sheriff Scotty Royse, the drug bust and weapons seizure took place around 5 p.m., Monday after a search warrant for Filvey's residence was executed.
Royse said complaints about firearms being discharged in the area had been reported to his office, with some of the reports alleging an automatic weapon was being fired.
According to an agent with the task force, three pounds of "high quality" processed marijuana was seized, as well as some newly planted marijuana plants from two "grow rooms" in the basement of Filvey's home. The agent said the marijuana has a street value of $6,000. Also seized during the search were several narcotics, including Xanax, Loratab and Morphine, in quantities of 100 or more, the agent said.

Head Start bus driver suspended

According to the Maysville Ledger Independent, officials with the Licking Valley Head Start program have suspended a bus driver after a 4-year-old child was left on a bus Tuesday morning.
Licking Valley Executive Director Judy Planck, and Toby Miller, director of the Licking Valley Head Start Program, confirmed the girl was found on the bus by personnel of Cheap's Chevrolet in Flemingsburg between 8;30 a.m. and 9 a.m. The bus was at the dealership for regular maintenance service when the child was discovered.
Miller said children are dropped off at the Head Start facility on High Street by 8:30 a.m., and she was at the garage with the child before 9 a.m.
Miller said the parents of the child came to the Head Start location and took the child home with them. "We think the child fell asleep, " Planck said, noting the state day care licensing agency, and the Department of Community Based Services, both entities of the Cabinet for Family and Children Services, have been notified about the incident.
Miller also confirmed all agencies involved in the regulation of Head Start programs and day care facilities were notified immediately.
Bus drivers are required to walk the center isle of the bus and then call into the agencies to say it was cleared, Miller said. The buses do not have video cameras on them.
Miller said when questioned about clearing the bus after the morning route, Blythe told her she did not see the child anywhere. The bus monitor on Blythe's bus was assisting a special needs child when the children left the bus and was unable to help Blythe clear the bus, Miller said.

Mrs. Papineau

Mrs. Oma Becky McKee Papineau, 75, of Pioneer Trace Drive died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, in Flemingsburg.
She was born June 15, 1933, in Fleming County to the late Yantis McKee and Pearl McKee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Papineau.
She is survived by a daughter, Pam (Nacho) Ramirez of Florence; one brother, Omar Paul McKee of Chicago, Ill.; three sisters, Jessie Humphries of Wallingford, Josie Gulley of Wallingford and Ann Elam of Winchester; four grandchildren, Jerry (Suzanne) Saunders, Tanya Davis, Angela (Kelly) Alcorn and Jessica (Johnathon) Saunders; four great-grandchildren, Cody, Breanna, Brandon and Trenton; and a special friend, Irma Mason of Flemingsburg.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Eldron Heber McKee.

Services are 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24, 2008 at Rameys Chapel Church with Pastor Jesse Hickerson officiating.
Burial following the service in the Rameys Chapel Cemetery.
Visitation is 11 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church.

Anna Rose Hamm

Mrs. Anna Rose Doyle Hamm, 77, of Foxport died Monday, Oct. 20, 2008, at her residence.
She was born July 28, 1931, in Lewis County to the late Leonard W. Doyle and Gracie Ackley Doyle.
She is survived by her husband, J.W. Hamm.
Services are 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, 2008, at the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ in Foxport. Pastor Hillary Underwood will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Mount Carmel.
Visitation is after 6 p.m., Wednesday at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.

Mrs. Johnson

Anna Dean Waltz Johnson, 77, of Georgetown, Ohio, formerly of Hillsboro, died Friday at her residence. She was the widow of Ellis Johnson. Services at 11 a.m Monday at the Hutton Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Hillsboro Cemetery. Visitation after 10 a.m., Monday at the funeral home.

Lowell Denton Obit

- Lowell Osborne Denton, 85, former owner and publisher of the Flemingsburg Gazette for almost 48 years, died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008.
He was born Aug. 11, 1923 in Fleming County, a son of the late Raymond and Edith Denton of Hillsboro.
As 1940 graduate of Fleming County High School, he received a degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1949, and was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho and Omicron Delta Kappa. He taught agriculture at Fleming County High School for two years.
His military service included three years in the United States Army. He was stationed in England and Germany with a tank destroyer battalion, attached to the First Army.
Lowell married Jean Lawson Rankin on Nov. 24, 1949 and they purchased the Fleming Gazette, as it was known then, from Ransom Todd in 1951. He saw the newspaper business change in many ways but the most striking evolution occurred in technology as linotype machines and typewriters were replaced by computers. However, he remained loyal to his manual typewriter, at which he wrote his weekly column, "From the Publisher's Pen." They sold the newspaper in 1998.
A three term member of the city council, he was actively involved in bringing the Randall Company and U.S. Shoe into Flemingsburg, was one of several to organize the local Chamber of Commerce in 1963, and helped plan the Chamber's first Friendship Night. Other civic duties included a stint as chairman of the area Red Cross and past president of the local Lions Club. He was a long-time member of the Kentucky Press Association, a former Sunday school teacher and member of the Flemingsburg United Methodist Church.

Throughout most of his adult life, his passion and foremost hobby remained the game of golf. He was a proud charter member on the board of directors who formed the Fleming County Golf Association in 1965. Until his health declined, he rarely missed a day at the course to play a round, practice putting or visit with friends. A highlight on his 70th birthday came when his golf score equaled his age.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died on November 26, 1999; two brothers George and Gene Denton; and two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Kidwell and Mrs. Rosaleen Jett.
Survivors include one daughter, Marjorie, a son-in-law, David, and grandson, Matthew Lowell Rankin Winfough, all of Cincinnati; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Ann Sorrell, of Hillsboro; several nieces and nephews; and his friend and companion, Mrs. Ausel Eubanks.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 at the Denton-Workman Funeral Home with Rev. Norman Wasson and Bro. Lynn Beach officiating. Burial will follow at the Fleming County Cemetery. Visitation 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20 at the funeral home.
